OT: General CFB Thread

It comes down to preseason rankings. When you start out highly ranked you have to lose more than three games to become irrelevant if you are in the SEC or B1G. Apparently if you are in any other conference then losing 2 will probably screw you unless you win the conference.
Totally agree, it’s why I’ve always argued that preseason rankings DO matter.
There’s also the aggregate effect of when you’ve got more ranked teams in your conference, your losses don’t make you fall as many spots and your wins appear more important.

I’ll say again that yes, it needs some tweaking but I don’t see how anyone can argue that it’s not better than what we’ve had. I mean in year ONE of the format you have 3 northern teams in the final four. You had 3 SE teams several years in the 4 team format for god’s sakes.

When you stack the deck every year with 50% of the teams in a 4 team field, nobody’s really surprised that that conference wins it more.
In no world am I arguing or disagreeing, you’re spot on.

I feel like we’ve lost something though where the 4 biggest conference champs are out.

You’re absolutely right it will get better, but we’ve lost something with this that we won’t get back. Nostalgia for me, nothing more/nothing less.

Yeah I just don’t have the same angst over conference champs. They’re still either getting an outright bye, or at a minimum home field in the first round.

It’s going to be interesting to see how long it takes to see a road team pull off a win in the first round, imo. Home field appeared to be a huge advantage this year, but then again, all four of those teams are still alive.

I hate to say it but I think Texas is gonna be an unstoppable force in this new world. Located in a major city with tons of wealth (including tech wealth) and no pro sports of their own. They're paying their backup QB like $5 milllion to sit the bench because of his last name and potential. I know we certainly can't compete with that, nor can OU for that matter which I think will bring them back to earth longterm. I'm choosing to spend more of my OSU interest going forward on baseball and softball where I doubt the NIL spigot will create as large of disparities as a lesser interest sport.

You have seen the $1,000,000 softball pitcher from Texas Texh?

Interesting read on where this is headed.

I have zero faith they can regulate the over the cap payments, given decades of failed efforts to police payments when they weren’t even allowed.

You just spoke my feelings about college sports in general. I'm officially less interested in the NIL games, more so in the scholarship/NIL games where the education is as important to the athlete as the game. Baseball/Softball not immune from NIL but so much less emphasis appeals to me and I will spend more future time in Stillwater during the spring than ever for these reasons.

Baseball is preseason top 25 too 👌

Bowl game viewership:
Games on ABC averaged over 5 million viewers
Cu-BYU 8 million viewers (a blowout)
Miami-ISU 7 million viewers
Multiple others over 5 million viewers
23 one score games
4 OT games

So when next year gets to bowl season and the annual‘there’s too many bowls!’ line gets thrown around, the answer to why is pretty clear.

The 33 non-College Football Playoff bowls averaged 2.7 million viewers, marking a 14 percent year-over-year increase and the largest audience since the 2019-20 season. Gains were particularly notable among viewers aged 18-49, with a 21 percent rise in that demographic.

Fourteen of the 33 bowls achieved at least a five-year high in viewership, with five reaching ten-year highs. Notably, the Alamo Bowl attracted 8 million viewers, making it the most-watched non-CFP/New Year’s Six bowl on any network in five years. Meanwhile, the ReliaQuest Bowl drew 6.5 million viewers, earning the distinction of cable’s most-watched non-CFP bowl in nine years.

Network Notables
ESPN’s 25 games averaged 2.4 million viewers, a 15 percent year-over-year increase, with fans consuming 12.9 billion minutes of content. These games contributed to three of ESPN’s 11 most-watched days of 2024. ABC also saw impressive results, drawing its largest non-CFP bowl audience in 11 years. Across five games, ABC averaged 5.0 million viewers, a substantial 71 percent year-over-year increase.

For context the NBA average is 1.56 million viewers.

The UFL averaged 1.05 million.

The appetite for football is so strong that a minor league in the spring draws 2/3 of what the NBA does.

Whew, rough national anthem, wow.🥴

Pulling for Penn State tonight and liking the Over at 44.

Also, Corso-it’s beyond cruel that they keep putting him out there. The stupid, tired reveal of his pick tonight was putting him in the leprechaun jacket and hat and dancing on the stage. He fell down in front of the desk.😞

Penn State is gonna look back at this game and say how did we not get the ball in Warren’s hands more often.
Best player on the field and you don’t find a way to get him the ball. That’s bad coaching in the end.
