OT: General CFB Thread

1 second before that picture the defenders head was up, he was looking at the receiver, he lowered his head to hit the defenseless receiver, he didn’t hit him with his face mask, the face mask is down, textbook targeting that is the exact play for why the rule was invented.

I think this game between ASU and Texass makes me mad because it reminds me of what OSU should be doing in big games.

We all know gundy would have given up down 24-8 in the first half and if by some miracle we got back in it… he would have run our running back right up the middle in the teeth of the Texas defense.

Arroyo is a hell or a OC but gundy would never let him get to the level the ASU coach went

"Using the crown of the helmet is an automatic call but must be reviewed for one or more of the actual qualifiers."

Qualifier: "Leading with helmet, shoulder, forearm, fist, hand or elbow to attack with forcible contact at the head or neck area"

View attachment 9063

This meets both the automatic flag criteria, and the required qualifier to confirm the call. This was a missed targeting call.
Now apply the launch with head or shoulder to head and neck area criteria to the hit on the Texas player. FTR, I thought both calls were targeting and would result in ejections. Only thing I can think of is they deemed it to not be “excessive?” 🤷‍♂️

Neither one was flagged and the official seemed to barely even look at the review, it was awfully quick.

Still trying to confirm but I just heard on the radio that the fake punt 50 yard dime by Bowling Green was actually their back up QB.

They changed his number to 18 and intentionally dressed him out exactly like the punter. (Punter wears 19)

It was apparently not their punter with the impressive rope, it was a natural QB. If I can find the story I will post it.

Hmmm, maybe I didnt think you could do that. That’s a HS tactic regardless. Gary Rose did that at Carl Albert with Daytwon Lowe years ago and there was a big stink about it.

Regarding targeting, pretty clear fans have no idea what it actually is. The people we were watching with were sure Texas had targeted, but ASU hadn’t earlier in the game.

“'Targeting' means that a player takes aim at an opponent for purposes of attacking with forcible contact that goes beyond making a legal tackle or a legal block or playing the ball.”

ARTICLE 4. No player shall target and make forcible contact to the head or neck area of a defenseless opponent (See Note 2 below) with the helmet, forearm, hand, fist, elbow or shoulder. This foul requires that there be at least one indicator of targeting (See Note 1 below). When in question, it is a foul (Rules 2-27-14 and 9-6). (A.R. 9-1-4-I-VI)

Note 1: "Targeting" means that a player takes aim at an opponent for purposes of attacking with forcible contact that goes beyond making a legal tackle or a legal block or playing the ball. Some indicators of targeting include but are not limited to:
  • Launch-a player leaving his feet to attack an opponent by an upward and forward thrust of the body to make forcible contact in the head or neck area
  • A crouch followed by an upward and forward thrust to attack with forcible contact at the head or neck area, even though one or both feet are still on the ground
  • Leading with helmet, shoulder, forearm, fist, hand or elbow to attack with forcible contact at the head or neck area
  • Lowering the head before attacking by initiating forcible contact with the crown of the helmet
Some notes:

Helmet to helmet contact IS NOT a prerequisite in anyway shape or form. (ASU non call)
Helmet to helmet IS NOT an automatic call either (Texas non call)

Using the crown of the helmet is an automatic call but must be reviewed for one or more of the actual qualifiers.

My assumption is in both cases they ruled that neither play qualified for Note 1, “no additional force outside of what was needed to make a legal tackle, block or playing the ball” occurred.

But even reading the entire rule and associated notes, neither player should have received a flag or ejection.

Fwiw Gene Sterrstore weighed in saying it’s textbook targeting.

I forget where the ball would’ve been placed, but had zero confidence ASU would hit a long FG.

They’re gonna rue that 4th & 13 forever, that much I’m sure of. Felt way too familiar as an OSU fan.🥴

I think they do need to change that...let there be automatic bids for league champs but not guaranteed byes

I disagree and would go a step further. Make the quarters on campus and not neutral site.

Teams are awarded more money the further they advance. If you start piling the Big 12 and ACC teams in the first round it's only going to drive more revenue into the SEC and Big 10.

Really twist it up and make it where a team can’t play two road games in a row if the first two rounds are on campus.

If Ohio State and Tennessee were switched that would have meant Oregon would have had to face Ohio State in Columbus this year.

I'm a fan of a little chaos but that would have really seemed like a screw job for the no 1 overall seed.

I was telling my wife they will say “4th and 13” for the next 50 yrs.

Funny thing is for as much as Sark tried to hand them the game w his play calling on the play he needed to channel genius the most he did. I don’t disagree w the ASU blitz (opposite of what we did on 4th and 8 at BYU), Sark guessed right and looked to have max protect and maybe only 2 guys (could have been 3) downfield. Double move by the WR and cement feet by the safety and Texas converts.

Then when ASU flipped and had 3 guys to the wide side I think it was their TE that ran a cross and was wide open. TX guessed right again and Levit never came off his primary to see the guy crossing the field.

Really wish ASU would have pulled that off especially in light of what ND did to Georgia.
