2024-2025 Portal Thread

So the excuse for not hitting bigger name/starting experience at high level players from the portal has been lack of NIL funds to bring those players in.

Is there a chance the NIL is lacking because there are few players that excite donors or that donors consider worth the money. I wouldn't want to kick big money to a bunch of guys that shouldn't be starting in the B12. Maybe if offers were out for guys that excited the donor base, the money would appear.
Last year, Gundy told the media he got Obi Ezeigbo out of the portal "because he was cheap." (embarrassing statement) I don't think any of the guys we've got so far will put much of a dent in the NIL fund.

Now that both coordinators are in place, we BETTER start offering some bigger names. The guys we've got so far will be fine IF they're surrounded with talented D1 transfers.

Ain’t happening. Sooo many schools in our region with soooo much more money. Bidding wars are taking place. Stars will be off the board then it’ll be 1000s of everybody left.

He is a clueless head coach with this stuff, just like John Smith. He got cornered and forced to buy-in from our donors. Now it’s a half-ass effort to try and salvage a team by getting D2 and FCS players just to have a team. It’s embarassing as a fan.

IMO honest opinion I hope we tank at recruiting, struggle again until he snaps on the national level and leads positive change across the board. Saban just retired. Mack just retired. I see Mike retiring in the next 3 years. Just be the change everyone wants to see because this NIL/portal crap is absurd

So you hope we suck next year?

Maybe they won't impact the NIL fund much, but Gundy has been complaining about roster sizes and not having enough spaces. Seems like if you're worried about number of guys you don't waste the space.

Don’t have to hope. Pretty evident. Takes creativity and a vision to tread through this tidal wave of chaos and I don’t think MG has either. Oftentimes it takes dramatic episodes to make changes and I don’t think these coordinators are the correct picks either. I think they are safe picks. I don’t see many recruits picking us over their other 30+ offers because Meachum walks into their living room. So many portal guys are getting dozens of offers

I think Gundy threw up his hands when he saw how bad the coordinators were this year but he had their backs publicly until the end of the season. That was his worst mistake. He should have fired both mid-season.

Has a head coach ever blocked his coordinators from interviews? I cannot believe we pay people nearly $1 million and they can’t be held accountable in the public interview room and answer questions.

They did 60 miles down the road and salvaged at least something from the season.

BV shows care in all that he does. Great human. MG not so much.

Making the move to the SEC is gonna take 3 to 5 years to build a team. In my opinion, that was a terrible move. You can put many elite coaches in Norman and they will have similar mediocre results. I give him props for making tough changes. Our OL abysmal, we’ve made zero changes.

Venables won't be there after next season.
I agree, but he didn’t stubbornly sit there and ride it out to 3-9.

It’s going to be interesting seeing him gone and Riley gone at USC in the same year. Two OU coaches who wind up being the sacrificial lambs as their schools transition to new conferences, while an easier CFP path through the big 12 is created.

Id rather be in our situation than theirs.
We've got enough NIL money coming to be very competitive in this conference for a long time.
ou is an absolute dumpster fire with no way of climbing the SEC ladder. They do not have the money to compete with the Big Boys and will be a perennial 7-5ish team.
