2024-2025 Portal Thread

Heard a guy on with Dusty & Danny earlier saying that there’s going to be another round of guys jumping into the portal from playoff teams. Said some of the names will surprise people.

The discussion moved from there to how different this is than NFL free agency because with it you know who the FA’s are from the start. With the college system and a budget of X, how much do you spend now versus holding some $ back for guys that might jump in later?

If you’re not a blueblood, your GM better have some damn good connections.

6'4 315 can't find any other info on him
From PFB:
"According to Pro Football Focus, Taukeiaho played 670 offensive snaps in 2024, in that time, he didn’t allow a sack while giving up just seven hurries.

Taukeiaho redshirted at Weber State in 2023 but still played in four games. He originally hails from South Jordan, Utah and played at Bingham High School."

Good info!

So the excuse for not hitting bigger name/starting experience at high level players from the portal has been lack of NIL funds to bring those players in.

Is there a chance the NIL is lacking because there are few players that excite donors or that donors consider worth the money. I wouldn't want to kick big money to a bunch of guys that shouldn't be starting in the B12. Maybe if offers were out for guys that excited the donor base, the money would appear.

I don’t claim to know, but I’m guessing that there’s communication between the collective operatives and donors on who some of the targets are..
I mean, we know that agents are talking with multiple schools and using offers to negotiate for more $$$, so it stands to reason that the collectives are going to donors and saying ‘hey we’re in the top 3 for this qb, etc…’

On the NIL/transfer topic: UNC QUADRUPLES their NIL, & Arkansas-with that NIL- loses 25 players to the portal in a couple of days.😳

Maybe if our head coach had embraced NIL from the start and went to donors and said we need $x to get the talent to compete the donors would have ponied up and we wouldn’t have had the season we just had.

But are the targets anyone that donors consider worth money? If you go and say hey we are trying to get this dude from SW Georgia State Tech, you probably won't get the money as if he was say a backup at Alabama or starter at Arizona.

Just feels like it's the same approach as our HS recruiting.

Sort of. He went in on nobody entering instead of getting new guys

He is a clueless head coach with this stuff, just like John Smith. He got cornered and forced to buy-in from our donors. Now it’s a half-ass effort to try and salvage a team by getting D2 and FCS players just to have a team. It’s embarassing as a fan.

IMO honest opinion I hope we tank at recruiting, struggle again until he snaps on the national level and leads positive change across the board. Saban just retired. Mack just retired. I see Mike retiring in the next 3 years. Just be the change everyone wants to see because this NIL/portal crap is absurd
