MLB Draft 2024-Cowboy Edition

Day 2 of the draft has concluded….thru 10 rounds, six cowboys have been selected. One signee( Caden Powell) was selected today. Notable…OF Garrett Shull was not selected today. Likely could mean he makes it to campus. Dealt with a hamstring injury throughout his senior season and his performance was down compared to his junior season.

Rounds 11-20 will take place tomorrow afternoon at 2ET. Looking forward to seeing which cowboys will be selected

Overall a good representation for the cowboys. Also showed with several guys getting drafted in the HS level how strong this class is.

Note: Aidan Meola did not get drafted, which I’m sure he’s bummed but getting him back will be huge and will provide protection for Schubart

What injuries did he have? Just the hamstring? Or something more major? Will be a great veteran in the clubhouse. Gritty and tough between the lines!

He been hurt every year he's been here. Freshman year shoulder injury, sophomore year dealt with a broken bone in his hand and quad, this year was is the hamstring. Easy top 3-4 talent if he proves he can stay. It's a pleasant surprise he went undrafted but the staff is probably thrilled to get him back. The question is where do you put him in the infield? It's a great problem to have.

We lose a lot to the draft, we lose a lot of our top signees to the draft also & we lose 13+ to the portal. We’ve picked up a few from the portal but will be interesting to see what we pair up with Shubert, Meola, Avery, the catchers & Bruegg. Not many arms left either

LOTS of work to do, sad for Meola but keeping him helps

Lost a lot of freshman and redshirt freshman…no impact players…only player worth mentioning would be Keisel but struggled with command and was drafted in the 6th round and is expected to sign…kinda expect it when players don’t want to sit and wait their turn.

Losing Mayfield and Doughty wasn’t a shocker. Everyone and their mama knew making it campus would take a miracle. Good chance we lose HS catcher Sir Jamison Jones to the nationals as well so chalk that up as a third HS player in the class.

Pitching staff is in rebuild. Pretty much lost your rotation and key bullpen guys. Ure was drafted in the 19th round…well how much money the giants want to throw at him. He wanted to get drafted, pitched in the cape and did pretty well. Test well in the MLB combine. Should he come back, him and Gabe Davis would be a heck of start building the weekend rotation. Rob reconstructed the pitching staff and turned them a top 10 staff in the country. Can he do it again?? Looking forward to seeing how the pieces fit in the fall.

Crazy year over year we never seem to have weekend starters more than one year. Jensen had a great couple of years but consistent starters just feel like an anomaly. I know we have had our fair share of TJ surgeries over the years and that affects draft status and decisions. Would love to see our #s compared to other similar teams. TJ info rarely comes out so would be hard to research. Sucks losing so much to the portal. Guys are gonna sit a yr or two and develop then look for starting time. Can’t blame them. We e received several elite transfers also

Problem is you have guys like Parker Scott, jensen Elliot would have good freshman years and unfortunately suffer TJ surgery the following. Ryan Ure was the same way and would’ve been in the rotation last season. Justin Campbell was probably the last weekend rotation guy that stayed healthy all 3 seasons and turned into a 1st round pick. Bryce osmond was healthy all 3 but was up and down here. Unfortunately he’s had nerve replacement surgery and TJ so he hasn’t begun his career. Most teams deal with a few years tearing their UCL.

West Virginia bullpen was extremely thin for the entire season due to multiple TJ surgeries but they found a way to make it work. Again, losing players is part of the norm. We’re not the only one losing 10+ players in the portal. Chances are it’ll happen 2025 and so forth. It also becomes a problem when you’re losing starters and impact players.
