Yeah, they take SAT instead for college in a lot of places. So it's an even smaller subset than college going students, it's those that are going to schools that prefer the ACT - I think both coasts prefer SAT.
Yeah, probably the case. Not trying to say OK's educational system is great but, using ACT scores seems like an poor way to assess.

So where did he get nearly $500M (typo in article) as what the state needs to get reimbursed for because of illegal immigrants? Also, didn't he refuse to use federal money a year or so ago?

So... it costs $158k per immigrant? WHAT? That seems a bit exaggerated.

Walters outlines five areas where he sees this as beneficial for Oklahoma schools: Parental rights, ending social indoctrination in classrooms, protecting patriotism in curriculum, stopping illegal immigration’s impact on schools and blocking foreign influence.

So we're going to keep kids from being indocrinated by indoctrinating them a different way.

It's super cool to have to think about what your spouse having to possibly find a new job as a direct result of someone being elected... Pretty awesome feeling, not stressful at all...

Are you saying Trump being elected is going to make your spouse lose their job? Why?

Or are you saying due to previous election of Walters?

I'm guessing alot of federal employees are feeling this way right now.

But hey, at least you don't have to listen to her laugh for 4 years.

My wife is a Title I reading instructor so her position/salary is federally funded. No federal dept of Ed, no funding for her salary.

I HOPE that any decision to eliminate or reduce the Dept of Education would not impact classroom teachers. We need more teachers and we need them paid more.

One way to direct more funding to teachers and to improve satisfaction of educators is to reduce administration and unnecessary regulation. Eliminating or significantly reducing the redundant overhead in the federal DOE is something that those that want the government to work for us (instead of vice versa) believe is a good thing.

Sorry, I'm just out of "hope" when it comes to our government making changes that positively impact education.

Also, I'd me more inclined to be hopeful if ANY of the talk was just about restructuring the dept. Literally all of the talk has been about abolishing/eliminating/getting rid of the dept and Walters himself has even publicly spoken about rejecting all federal funding in the past.

As conservatives like to say elections have consequences.

Republicans if they can stay on long enough will start advocating for the sell off of public schools to the highest bidder if the private school companies can come up with enough bribe money. If the people don't want that to happen, it will be up to them to vote out Republicans.

honest question: how will states make up for the $$ that Dept. of Ed. gives them if DOE is gone?? How much will it affect special education, free and reduced lunches, no more grants???

I assume states will get block grants. States can then decide how to spend the money themselves.

but isn't the DOE in charge of the grants??
It will probably be re assigned to a different agency who just handles making the payment and has little to no oversight.

I wouldn't be surprised if the long term goal is to remove federal funding but it isn't happening right away.
