2024-2025 Portal Thread

Another intriguing concept is forcing high school kids to sign at least a 2 yr deal w a minimum guaranteed. Portal kids can sign anywhere from 1 yr deals to however many “on field” yrs they have left if they’ve redshirted.
I love that.

This model where we’re paying high school kids that have never stoped foot on the field for “potential” instead of performance is garbage.

Guy goes out and proves himself, great. Paying guys millions because some service said they’re 5* locks is terrible. Especially with guys in the locker room who’ve competed.

I would actually go a step further and have a hard team wide cap that is the same for all teams. Then have a minimum salary by yr. 1st yrs removed from high school receive $50,000 each. Then the guaranteed base goes up each yr by X amount through the exhaustion of eligibility. Players out of high school sign 2 yr agreements (minimum but can sign up to a 6 yr deal).

But there has to be a salary adjustment mechanism for freshman in yr 2 of the contract based on how they perform in yr 1.

Any salary limitation would have to come from a players’ union. Restrictions of the rights of the players to make money has already been thrown out by the SCOTUS.

To an extent. That ruling was tied to the initial NIL compensation conversation. Not outright paying of employees. They opened a giant Pandoras can of worms with this. They’re gonna have to help close it.

I think a players’ union is where this goes.
And they’re going to be surprised when “management and the owners” retake a huge portion of the power that was given to the players when this started.

It’s the only business model available for long term success.

Not asking this in a debating manner but I’m curious as to who the owners/management are?

Is it the Ad’s/Univ’s? Is it the Conf Commish?

This is another aspect that makes it so tough and could keep the leverage on the players side.

As we’ve seen the AD and Univ Pres serve at the behest of the BoR. And the conf commish serves at the behest of the ADs.

I think there’s also a power shift occurring where the BiG10 is going to be the top dawg. They have the TV money equal to the SEC and their endowments show they have the ability raise money.

I don’t think we know who management is yet. But if there is a player union/association coming, they’re combining to collectively bargain with someone. 🤷‍♂️
