2024-2025 Portal Thread

Of all the transfers out, I will be interested to see how Daniel's does in Norman. I don't think I have spoken to a single OSU fan who who does't realize how often he gave up on a play instead of making a play. All the talent and instinct to be a super star but too low effort to get there. If he manages to do it at ou then we'll have to wonder why our previous coaching staff weren't able to push him to that level and be glad that changes were made to bring new coaches in. But if he has the same attitude at ou that he had at OSU then all we can do is just laugh at their misfortune, especially if it cost them half a mil.

My wonder is if Knowles is coming to OU. If so that might bring back some of his effort.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say he earns his money at OU. I think the level of coaching was so bad under Nardo, that he was completely demoralized and figured just get it over with. With a good coach and a good defensive scheme, the guy could live up to his potential.
He played 3 different positions in 3 yrs w different position coaches and 2 DC’s. I don’t pretend to know what goes on in an 18-22 yr old’s mind but could some of what we saw be a confidence/mental issue vs heart?

I, like you, can't read his mind/heart but I would interpret the abrupt changes of speed (to a much slower speed) in the middle of plays to be more indicative of a lack of effort than not knowing what you are doing. I can get behind a guy who doesn't know what he is doing but goes ahead and does it at full speed. But his play came across as half-hearted and lackadaisical. I would much rather have 11 unathletic walk-ons flying around in every which direction at 100% effort than 11 athletic freaks going half speed and seeing no fire or want-to at all in their demeanor. Perhaps I have been overly critical and this isn't a fair critique but I don't recall ever being more frustrated by a single player for having such a boatload of giftedness but seemingly squandering it.

Now, did the factors of coaches and position changes that you mentioned factor into his lack of success? Certainly. But I don't think there is any excuse that justifies the effort that I saw on the field.

All good. Just wanting to correct inaccurate information.

I'm not super excited about JK, but the last guy we got that underachieved at LSU (Tyron Johnson) worked out great so crossing fingers.
Actually, the last guy was Dee Anderson (2020) and that was a complete head scratcher as to why Gundy took him. 4 games and no stats at OSU.

I was on my soapbox big time against having him come in. It was waste of a scholarship when looking at the depth returning that year.

Just wanting to correct inaccurate information. :ROFLMAO: Sorry I had to. :ROFLMAO:

I stand corrected. Apply my previous statement to the guy before lost from LSU. Haha

They might end up adding a fall portal window. Sounds like we are going to be over the limit once the freshman recruits show up. We will be forced to cut some players and I doubt we are the only program in that situation.

Need to move closer to an nfl model.

No spring practices or games. No spring portal.

Just conditioning/workouts and a couple of OTA weekends. Except these OTAs are not voluntary.

3-4 OTA weekends in May and June along with workouts.

Open Fall Camp in mid July

Start games 2nd to last weekend in August w a “preseason” type game against an FCS opponent.

End season 2nd week in November w conf championships over thanksgiving.

Playoffs start 2nd weekend of December

Championship game is New Year’s Day.

Portal opens and closes by end of 3rd week of January.

Kids sign contracts 1-6 yrs in length w 6 to play 5. Player can only enter portal if his contract term is up. There are guaranteed amounts for injury. But there are also penalties for failure to perform including character and classroom. Kid can’t just quit going to class to negate his contract then hit the portal.

High school kids can commit and sign contract anytime prior to Dec 1st of their sr yr. Just like the 2026 kid that committed. We offer him a contract now and he can sign now if he wants. It’s binding w clauses to protect school (graduation and character) and also compensates him for 1 yr if he’s injured and unable to perform. Kid doesn’t have to sign up until Dec 1 of his sr yr but can if he wants.

Are you saying all contracts are 6 to play 5 or would you envision something more like Gundy said, the top talent is probably signing one year deals and seeking max payouts every year? Those type guys are probably NFL bound after year 3 anyway.

What are the outs for a coach getting fired or leaving as that was the players' argument up front about not being as mobile as the coaches can be?

Have to have buyout situations to protect both the programs and players. You want Ollie or Nick Martin after 2023 and OSU gets paid more up front for the talent on top of whatever they offered the player.

I don't have the answers but these types of conversations are fascinating to me and we're all so bored with what football and basketball did this year, it might liven up the place.

I think more like Gundy proposed. Kids can sign anywhere from 1 yr deals to 6 yr deals. Max on the field playing is 5 yrs. So in theory a kid could redshirt 1 yr and sign 5 more 1 yr deals playing in all 5. Or he could sign straight out of high school a 6 yr deal and play 5 yrs w 1 redshirt.

I would also envision that since we are now straight out paying kids to play they honor their deal w the school and not the coach. Kid signs a 3 yr deal and coach leaves/fired after kids 1st yr he has to stay the remainder of the contract length.

I also don’t have a problem w incentive bonuses for players funded through revenue sharing and not NIL.

Need to move to a hard salary cap for all teams. If your team makes conf champ game then each player gets an equal share. Then for each level of playoffs players get equal bonus. I actually think the CFP should be required to buy insurance for the 2 deep.

Also pay out a little for bowl games. Equal share to all players who suit to play. I also wouldn’t mind the bowls or their sponsors being allowed to buy insurance policies for star players and even paying them to market for the game and actually play.

Another intriguing concept is forcing high school kids to sign at least a 2 yr deal w a minimum guaranteed. Portal kids can sign anywhere from 1 yr deals to however many “on field” yrs they have left if they’ve redshirted.
