2024-2025 Portal Thread

I like this a whole lot better than the Chandler Morris thing and paying over a million to a guy for one year who has already maxed out his potential. Hejny was the 12th rated QB in the 2024 class, a dual threat guy with some speed (Track guy in HS), a year redshirted to acclimate to college, and should come in ready to compete. Added bonus is that Meacham has already been around him for a year.

I'll trust Meacham on this. Seems to have a lot of talent.

Doesn't really solve the lack of experience problem in the QB room as he has yet to throw a pass in college. Might have a JW Walsh type role. We'll see.

I’m ok with it, Gundy values experience in the QB position WAY too much. Rangel and Smith both showed glimpses, Rangel on the road at BYU, and I give Smith extra credit for being a true freshman with very limited practice reps. Flores is the wildcard but if he was running ahead of those guys in practice before his injury, that makes me hopeful.

This kid coming in just based on his ratings and offers out of HS may have the most potential. I think ultimately he and Flores will compete for QB1 next season.

It’s odd because it seems like last year he was trying to find any excuse he could not to give the job to Bowman (the experienced guy). I wonder if it has less to do with experience and more to do with Gundy predetermining who he thinks should get the job and then him waiting for something to happen to confirm his decision.

Any word on Rangel's injury? Is he expected back for spring or out until summer or fall camp?

If he's still out for spring then I totally get the hard need to bring in another QB (even inexperienced) just to have 3 bodies for camp..

Same for Flores. I haven't heard about his recovery either. We may just have 2 healthy qbs in the spring, both redshirt Freshmen.

I would think Rangel would be cleared for Spring. It was a broken collarbone in mid Oct. That should be fully healed in 3 months so would think he’d be good to go for March/April.

No telling on Flores since it’s unclear what the foot injury/surgery was.

Zach on Pokes Report made a comment that Rangel was doubtful because the break was worse than originally thought. Saud he didn't know about Flores. I was wondering if anyone here knew more or could confirm.

I think Flores is more complicated. When I visited with his family early in the season last year they didn’t act like he was hurt, but that was early.

Chronic non-healing foot injuries scare me.

Technically, I think this is a congenital issue, but there’s a decent chance that the surgery has complications or that he experiences chronic pain going forward with high-level athletics.

I think having a plan for QB that is not Flores is smart. Then, if he can contribute and is better than what we have in the room, great. But hoping he is the future and wanting to move to a running QB system seems risky.

Pokes Report just dropped another article about upcoming visits after the dead period. If the names tagged in the article are legit and they’re visiting, would be huge gets if we can land them. About 4 solid DL from good programs (Clemson, ou, Syracuse) the WR from UNLV that went off this year (previously at Texas).
