2024-2025 Portal Thread

This is exactly my concern with the 6-7 year window.

In the Pavia ruling, for instance. If JuCo’s are the only option you have coming out of HS, have you really been denied the opportunity to earn NIL? I guess I just don’t understand the logic and judges reasoning on that one.

💯 - the powers that be right now remind me of the classic IT guy that never actually fixes anything, just band aids the latest bug without any concern for the problems that band aid just created.

From purely a recruiting strategy side, I could easily see the Oklahoma State’s of the world only recruiting Juco players and living in the portal.

Those kids are two years older, two years stronger, two years more mature, why even take a chance on a high school kid at this point? Of course, all of that could change with contracts and what not but in the current set up, hypothetically, I think I would just recruit 20 year-old freshman out of juco And then spend all my extra time and money in the portal every year.

They let the horses out of the barn and now it’s like ‘maybe fences are a good idea!’

This feels like other situations where the balance of power was on one side for so long (institutions and coaches), then the pendulum swings wildly in the other direction (individual player rights). The next step imo needs to be finding the middle ground or they’re going to kill the golden goose. I can’t think of a quicker way to do it than turning the top of the sport into a regional event and having uncontrollable player movement.

7000 in the portal is insane. My rough math says there are around 13650 players, so I’m guessing guessing Reeds numbers are right, but that’s crazy. The one kid from Arkansas went into the portal, withdrew his name to stay at Arky, now he’s back in the portal. And he’s got until 12/28 to change his mind again!😳

Several people seem to have referred to some changes regarding jucos. I am sure it has been discussed but I have missed it. Would someone mind summarizing what has changed?

Bill Snyder in the 1990s who was building those powerhouse teams by having half his recruiting classes coming from the Juco ranks!!!

Here is an ESPN article.

Do we have any players who would benefit from this ruling?
I’m assuming any of them that went the JuCo route. The judge basically said that the NCAA can’t start their eligibility clock in JuCo because they can’t make NIL $$$, is how I understand it and heard it explained.

I still question if a guy/girl has to go the JuCo route, are you actually missing out on any NIL $$$ that really exists for them?

I question that. They won’t make anywhere near the money someone going D1 would but I can see local businesses at JUCO cities offering advertising deals. Kinda the whole point of how NIL should have been.
