2024-2025 Portal Thread

Listening to College Sports Extra on Sirius earlier today and once again, I find myself agreeing with Jimbo Fisher and his takes.

•pointed out how the transfer portal is simply unrestricted free agency. None of the professional leagues allow this for a reason, it creates too many instability and hurts the product.

•thinks the college season should start second week of August now because there’s not really a practical date change that can be made to the portal window that works with the academic calendar.

•says that the people crying about Alabama losing out to SMU and Indiana are trying to do exactly what they did to FSU last year-change the criteria just a little bit more to favor the SEC. The same people won’t even acknowledge Tennesse’s beat down and say they shouldn’t be a playoff team.

I agree w this and I think they need to adopt even more of the NFL but don’t see that happening bc most of the bluebloods are the Yankees/dodgers while the rest of us are the Brewers/Athletics. Tell me aTm is enjoying seeing what SMU did this yr and what tech is currently doing in the portal.

Move up the schedule so that NY Day is the NC game. Open the portal Jan 2-10. Institute salary caps w guaranteed min/max of $150,000 for 1st yr (HS, JUCO Lower division NCAA) and then increase that min every yr but take off the max off yr 1. Give them 8 yrs to play 6 (or 7 to play any number up to 7). Make them sign 1-7 yr contracts w salary guarantees even if they get cut (% of max contract value). Create a board of commissioners w a league commissioner. And finally enforce tampering rules w heavy fines and reduction in roster. And finally give each team a 10-20 player allowance for walkons or practice squad players that get paid a straight $25,000.

They even need to modify scheduling. It’s asinine that the SEC plays 8 conference games and thinks a guaranteed win in November against Maine or New Hampshire somehow “means more.”

🤔 I don’t know about the 6-7 year window.

I think they need to get out in front of this. There are already lawsuits where student athletes are suing for the right to “earn” for more years.

There will be unionized “student athletes.”

I know you have issues w Gundy but he has been out in front of some of these issues going back yrs and longer eligibility is one of them. I think he sees it as a way for the OSU’s of the world to compete w high pay rolls. Basically the right kind of experience (opposite of what we had this yr) helps you compete against 18-19 yo high paid blue chips. He also has been advocating for contracts. Don’t think he’s wrong.

Fair enough. I’m looking at it more from the standpoint of the extra spots it would take away from HS kids. I could see what you’re talking about though with the ruling in Pavia’s case, but it was also just one judge.

Plenty more to be hashed out in the courts, no doubt.

I’m feeling much better about next year‘s football season than I was two weeks ago. Still remains to be seen, but that list of portal transfers is fairly impressive!
I am in no way saying I would have been happy w 7-5 this yr and “ifs and buts and aunts w nuts” but if our D is ranked in the 80’s and our QB is avg at best we beat Utah, BYU, Baylor and Tech this yr. Even w Nardo and Dunn.

Of course we don’t have the changes we need for next yr if we went 7-5 this yr but I’m feeling much better about how we are setting up

is poor performance from our recruiting department to continually be unable to land high end talent. Can you honestly disagree with that assessment?
I think we need to realize we just came off a 3-9 season and replaced the entire coaching staff. Now if you want to say our recruiting has been lackluster in previous years then I agree with you, but this off season recruiting is going better than I thought it would.

The fact that we didn’t have 30 guys jump in the portal the day it opened says a lot as well. In the middle of a coaching overhaul no less..

I haven't heard anything about Glass being let go, so I guess he's still on staff? That and the analysts? I was just wondering during how deep the staff cuts went?

Yeah, it's more of an accumulated frustration. One bad year, who cares. It just seems for several years we haven't recruited at a high level, and for the past few we haven't even recruited at a mediocre level. Maybe I've become too jaded by that.
