2024-2025 Portal Thread

There's only one thing a portal QB could offer that the QBs already on our roster couldn't after a year of development and a functioning offensive system, and that's experience. We don't need experience next year, as we'll have very little on it as it is. I would rather develop one of the young talents already on our roster than pay for a one year rental.
Sure. But you don't have board members and a fan base expecting you to turn it around immediately.
(And rightfully so)

They should have been developed this year. Injuries did play a part. Rangel and Flores have been on campus for almost a combined 5 years, and there's little to show for it.

I'd love to know what Meacham and Johns think.

I’d play moneyball. Strib is good, but with Lofton, Shettron, Ford, Shoto, and some other guys i think we’ll be fine at WR
I'm glad to see this for him and for us. We already have a full QB room next year that will be somewhat of a circus from a competition standpoint. Having one more person trying to get snaps will make it that much more complicated. Maybe I'm wrong on him, but unless he's an NFL level guy, I'd rather roll with what we have and figure something out between smith/flores/rangel, assuming flores is what he's touted to be.

There’s a reason that experienced QB’s are in demand.

When you don’t have that and have a room full of unproven guys, you want competition. You’re talking about 3 guys that the brilliant head coach wouldn’t play this year, despite Bowman’s suckage. So either Gundy’s an idiot or those guys haven’t distinguished themselves at all.

You make exceptions for said players. They’re no longer student athletes anyway so who cares right?
Can you though? I don’t know. From a legal standpoint can you actually say ‘well he’s a football player, so he can start classes two weeks into the semester…’?

I mean I get where you’re coming from, but I don’t think it’s that simple.

Honestly what could the NCAA do? They literally have no teeth. When a coach or university decides they’re gonna do what they want in a situation like that, the dominoes will fall and everyone will start doing it. It’s absolutely disgusting what has happened to college football.

I’m looking forward as a solution to the portal BS that exists and how to help solve it. Yes you could do that if the powers that be actually solved important issues.

As it stands right now, who the hell knows.

Maybe I wasn’t clear enough. From a standpoint of Federal Law, I don’t know if you can just change admissions requirements because the student is an athlete. There are already policies in place that eliminated athlete only dorms, athlete only dining facilities. Seems like saying that Johnny QB can just show up and start the semester whenever would be discriminatory to the other students.

Maybe the court ruling coming in April changes this, I don’t know.

That’s what I meant by ‘so college.’ College FB, and perhaps BB need a centralized structure that’s not the NCAA. The sport is stuck in an awkward transition phase that has one foot in the old world and the SEC/B1G wanting to maximize the future.

Maybe you put all bowl games in Dec? Get rid of NYE and January games. Then give kids first wk of January to enter portal and sign. Enroll 2nd wk in January.
Conference championships were a week ago and the national championship is not until second week of January…. plenty of time to maximize both revenue and games played as the schedule exists today.

You lost me on that one. The TV networks keep all of the billions they’re shelling out, we just adjust how the schedule works….. help me understand what you were saying.
They have no incentive to shorten their content window in order to make the portal situation better. The absolute worst of the bowls outdraws NBA games. The CFP championship game is 1/21 this year. So to think that they’re going to give up almost a month of live programming isn’t going to happen.

With 12 regular season games, conference cg’s & 3 weeks of playoffs, what adjustments would be made? Start the CFP the week after conference CG’s? Ain’t gonna happen.

Make the top 4 CCGs a first round non-elimination NCG entry for ranking. Give the four winners a bye. Keep the other four in the NCG tournament. Add four at large teams. First round on the second Saturday of December. That leaves 8 teams. Second round on the third Saturday. That leaves 4 teams. Third round on the fourth Saturday. That leaves two teams. NCG on the first Saturday of January or NYD. Done. I’m sure that there are flaws in this but it is just one idea.

I hear you. The track record for Gundy playing the right QB tends to lean towards the former rather than the latter. More likely, Flores was the clear cut answer and his foot injury wouldn't let the flip the switch on it.
