2023 Basketball Offseason

Good luck to Avery & Kalib. I honestly think the transfer portal and covid eligibility is a good thing for them. They put their 4 yrs in and I hope they find success at the next place. Will be curious to see if they are more confident & consistent under a new coach/system.

I think them leaving puts even more pressure on Boyton. If they are much more consistent next season it will be a clear indictment of his struggles to develop players, instill discipline on the court & run an offensive system.

He better go find a true point guard that can get Wright & Thompson (assuming he stays) open looks.

I wouldn't even count Cade in that role.

To answer your question, no we have not had a leader. We have not had a true Alpha. That comes from the top down, no identity, no system we believe in and recruit to, no leadership. All of that I expected early in his tenure because of the situation, now no longer have any grace to give.

He made the comment after we got pounded by UCONN, (the gap between them and us is staggering) "they have all the pieces/makings of a National Championship team." Guess what? He was right so he clearly knows what it takes he just can't build it apparently.

I hate to say it but the guys Boynton has brought in have just been soft. He adds to that though. Those guys don’t really fear him. He’s not gonna yank you out of the game, he’s not gonna chew your ass. I’m not saying a coach HAS to do those things all the time but if you’re going to preach discipline and accountability then how about actually practicing it..

If you look at Boyntons recruits, he has missed on a ton of guys. Yeah he recruits very well but most of the time when they get to campus they fizzle out.

I don’t know know how you find guys that have that leadership quality but you’re right we’ve been missing that for years and it shows. The biggest difference between us and UCONN is that Hurley can coach circles around Boynton. They aren’t even in the same stratosphere. And if his guys deserve it then he will absolutely rip into them.

You hit on something that I’ve wondered about w Boynton. Have zero first or second hand knowledge but after reading articles that discuss boynton handing out offers to specific kids it seems like he offers a lot after seeing them at a showcase or AAU type event. It seems like those events put a premium on showcasing individual talent where kids get a lot of games crammed into a weekend where a premium is not placed on toughness and leadership and ultimately competing and winning as a team.

If a young man spends 4-6 yrs moving from team to team and plays 4-6 games each weekend where you question if winning is really the most important thing and doesn’t develop a winning and leadership mindset…how do you get those kids on campus and flip the switch to teach discipline, shot selection and leadership?

Yes if you look at it he recruits a lot of guys that you can get enamored with because they are so athletic. That doesn’t necessarily translate to the next level. Just because you’re posterizing kids that are 5’11 in high school doesn’t mean jack squat in college. You gotta be able to shoot. We really haven’t shot the ball well for years. the last 4 years we have ranked 333rd, 345th, 272nd, and 215th in 3pt %.

Glad to see Quion Williams returning. He received too much playing time this year and can't shoot the 3, but he still had some great moments. Rebounding, put-backs, 'some' assists. He was only a Freshman.

The main reason I'm glad he is returning is that he was a vocal leader on the court late in the season. While several of the older players would stand around in the team huddles in the paint, he started taking over some of those huddle talks.

entire St. John's recruiting class is bailing on Pitino
Pretty sure Pitino basically said he was going to overhaul the whole team during his press conference. I don't think they bailed on him as much as he doesn't want any of them or most of the 2022-23 roster.

Guess he is Pitino, whatever that is worth in 2023, but I would be interested to see who he thinks is out there

Portal recruiting has been quiet. Sure would be nice to somehow snag Abmas (ORU) or Tyler Perry (UNT)
Abmas is Wichita State bound. An article says OSU is not Perry's leading choice. OU Sooners have the best shot to land Perry. Obviously, anything can happen. But Abmas will not be recruited by Boynton. Despise the horrid offensive stats thus far in Boynton's tenure, Boynton simply refuses to recruit offensively. It's defense, defense, defense.

Dominantly recruiting defense is ok as long as there's a legit point guard. Unfortunately, Boynton cannot land a proper point guard. If I were Boynton, I'd go all-in recruiting Abmas.. but he won't. It's unfortunate because Abmas clearly has the talent to helm the point guard position at any Big 12 school except maybe Kansas and Baylor.

We have at least two more years hoping Boynton extinguishes the fire dumpster of a basketball program. I mean, he's had to deal with NCAA infractions.. and he's not a terrible HC. It could be way worse. But he's out of here after the 24-25 season unless a miracle occurs.

Unless Boynton wins the portal lottery, this upcoming season will be a disaster. There's no way OSU basketball has a .500 or better record. It's gonna be a total and utter disaster. Offensively, it will be the worst offensive production of Boynton's tenure. We'll struggle to put up 60 points a game, if we're lucky.

What a bummer

UConn just hired a ‘general manager of basketball.’

They will oversee operational functions for men’s, women’s, and NIL functions for both programs. I will see if I can find the story and post it because I just saw the tagline running at the bottom of the screen.

This seems to be very forward thinking.
