Official Game Thread: South Alabama vs. Oklahoma State

Ok. Time for some podcast notes:
- QBs: after reviewing the tape, Gunnar did not look good. Stares down receivers, struggled with accuracy, threw 3 interceptable balls, poor pocket presence which leads to sacks. Looked good and made the right reads with rpo's as the lone bright spot. Spent about 5-10 minutes bashing the decision to give him 57% of the snaps over the others and that he really did not deserve the shot. They saw enough to say that he is not the guy moving forward. They felt Bowman looked ok, but seemed to really struggle after a couple early drops including the Bray drop for a sure TD. The INT they wanted to put on the WR not running the right route. Rangel was sick the week before and missed a practice, they didn't see why he was not given any snaps if they were only going to give him 9% at the end of the game. Called the 3 QB decision an "abomination". They want to see Rangel or Bowman get the majority of the snaps against ISU and to eliminate GG from the running except for some JW Walsh goaline stuff.
- RBs: Criminal how few carries that Ollie got last game. They feel that it should be 55% Ollie, 30% Collins and 15% or less for Nixon. Not super impressed with Nixon as when he has one guy to beat, he cannot make him miss or break the tackle.
- WR: Brays drops are a killer. Must get that fixed because it completely negates his ability to separate from DB's. Several WR's seemed to have issues running the correct routes and reading the coverage due to a dropping safety making the cover 1 actually a cover 2.
- TE/HB: Not a ton on this grouping this pod.
- OL: Yikes. Pretty terrible game all around until the end of the game when Cooper slid to LT. Wilson performed the best, but just about everyone else struggled. Birmingham was really bad, they don't want to see him play tackle moving forward. Surmised that he must have lost lateral agility after the last injury. As a group, they are regressing when pass blocking even from last year's performance.

- DL: Kirkland and Goodlow looked good, but were not dominant. The others were getting blocked effectively and were not causing chaos. At times were getting blown off the ball.
- LB's: Oliver had a hell of a game (10 tackles, a strip sack, a fumble and a pass defended), the other LBs didn't play super well. Martin got eaten up by larger blockers several times, and they wondered what Benson does. Does not seem to be super effective in his position. They took bad lines a lot or were effectively blocked, allowing USA's running game to get to the 3rd level.
- DB's: Safety play left a good deal to be desired. Daniels has been out of position and Rucker got beat several times after getting faked out on shorter routes. Needs to be cleaned up for next week. CB play was pretty good overall.

Iowa State:
- They really struggle running the ball and their o line is suspect. QB seems to have struggles like ours due to no run game. Both the QB and their best receiver (a slot WR) were throwing up with the stomach bug last game.
- Unlike their last several years, the D line is the weaker part of the ISU D. That being said, they are a good unit and the best we will have faced by far.
- Will be a "get right" game for our D. If they don't clean things up and look better, it is going to be a long season.
- Want to see playcalling improve and went as far as to say that Dunn is running out of rope. That and a lot of plays they saw during camp have not been run at all.
- Bet the under.

I have listened to them and it is a 50/50 split for me! I really like the one guy who does most of the analysis, Ragusa?👍. The other guy frankly needs to just keep his effing mouth closed and let the other guy do 90% of the talking!!!

I noticed the same things with Gunnar as they pointed out. Also, he has by far the weakest arm and when your offense avoids throwing to the middle of the field and only wants to throw to the extreme sidelines a weak arm isn’t going to cut it.

It was a good listen. I agree on the Gunnar take. I've seen enough.

I didn’t rewatch the game but live it seemed like from the 2nd quarter on on 1st down they were walking the safety up into the box on the wide edge and a lb on the short edge. We never changed the play. Then on obvious passing downs they would shift the line to overload our left side and also come w a blitz. Again we never adjusted.

We’ve known since 2021 that our center just isn’t it. Our snaps are slow and wildly inconsistent in placement. At least once on Saturday a wide left snap blew up the play. Cooper won’t be the answer at LT bc he is way undersized but he might be the best option unless a younger OL can perform. Honestly I’m surprised we haven’t moved Brooks out for try as he is at least aggressive/more athletic even if he’s undersized.

We got flagged for holding on a quick slant. How bad is that. Our line is basically the same as last year. We have not progressed and will struggle to win until someone decides that the Oline is a priority. It’s past time to play some of the young guys. If they make mistakes then that’s why you’re getting paid. Coach them up. If you can’t coach them up to be better than what we have or they are simply not better than what we have (recruiting) then the answer is the coach.

I think our oline is worse than last year and with supposed better players.

We probably need to just tell the players we have to get better or lose the scholarship. We need to hit the transfer portal and try to pick up any half decent linemen with experience

Cooper is 6-7 320, how is that undersized??? The center in 2021, Godlevske who transferred from Miami of Ohio was a three time all MAC performer and I believe was second team All Big XII on one of the All Big XII teams!!! I would give a $1,000 dollars to have him back playing now on our line! 🤔

I should have been more clear about 2021 center. I agree w everything you said about Godlevske. Wasn’t he injured for part of the end of the season and out for the Big12championship game where we had something like 12 snaps from inside the 5 and got in the endzone 1 time?

There is no way Cooper is 6’7 320. My bet is he is more in the 6’4 to 6’5 and maybe 290. Look at him next to Mahalski or Birmingham. Those guys are closer to 6’6 or 6’7 and above 320. I know the roster says 6’7 but we know what rosters mean.

I said that as no disrespect to Dalton as I think he’s one of if not the best OL we have playing right now. If I’m wrong on his size then I’m wrong but again no disrespect intended. I like the kid and am glad he chose to transfer here.

I am 5’10” and stood next to him with my 6’4” brother in law last spring when they had that open practice and let us meet the players and he was a good 2 inches taller than my brother in law plus he is more cut than the other offensive lineman in that he doesn’t have much belly on him!!!

The 2-2 Jags are losing to James Madison today. The line on the KSU game should be somewhere between - 35and -42 points. If you get hammered by 26 by a bad FCS team, it will get very ugly against good Big 12 Teams. We will likely find out who their 3rd string QB is before the end of the game.
