2024-2025 Portal Thread

I don’t think D2 prospects are going to fix our problems either…
Normally that's true, but because of the extra covid year and all that super senior stuff, there are a bunch of kids that would have normally been D1 but had to go D2 or get left out. I think we're targeting the best of those that fit for us. Most of them will have 2-3 years eligibility left plus experience.

Obviously we all want a bunch of guys who were 5 stars and then freshman all-Americans transferring in as sophomores. But we ain't got the $ for that.

Did you graduate in 79, or were you born in 79, or does the 79 mean something else?

This is the same narrative garbage he’s been spewing for a decade now. Go get attractive coordinators who will put kids in the NFL and they will come. Nardo ain’t putting crap in the league. Dunn/Gundy’s QB incompetence and Dickey’s PATHETIC recruiting/coaching ruined the projection of several guys trying to make it to the NFL. We are set back so far now. We are going to be buried a couple years until he retires. There is a reason teams like TU are hiring 36yo coaches. They connect and understand what’s going on. Gumby has no clue

What is your motive for this response? I'm curious what you want to accomplish.

Look at ASU. You get a young motivated coach who understands all these new hurdles and they have success. Coaches like Mack Brown and other older veteran coaches do not fully understand all this. OSU is going to have minimal finances which translates to minimal talent. It’s a cycle. He burned a lot of bridges with many of our top donors so money is going to be severely limited a few years. I’m just saying in the portal world, you must adapt. John Smith never did and look where it got him. I don’t like seeing this NIL disaster

We can say NIL all we want and we have to go get big time guys but the fact of the matter is a majority of these kids are demanding insane amounts of money. Our NIL is improving but it’s no where near what others in the country are at. Gundy has to be smart about who he throws money at to land. On top of that, factor in resources for the recruiting visits/services. If they invest a lot of that money into a kid that in the end won’t come to OK St because we can’t match $500k, then it’s a complete waste of time and resources. Gundy does have to adapt and do a better job with the portal but we also have to be real about who we are.

Also, those donors were never going to fork over enough money to go get the guys that big time programs are going after.

ASU is doing it on the back of a RB that has zero stars out of high school and transferred in from Sacramento State.

I mean that's kind of the point of going to these types of school if you really want to play D1 football. Get enough film that you can transfer to a D1 school. Lot of underscouted talent in these schools.
Most wont like what I am about to say but I think next year will be gundys last one. These hires and the lack of talent across the board is going to be a tall task for a winning season.

Major donors are mad at him and holding back on NIL funding.

It could be. The next month may be his last chance to save his career.

I agree that we need to aim a little higher in the portal, but we also are at a point where we need to find a few diamonds in the rough.

Not firing Nardo or Dunn during the season now has him behind the 8 ball to make hires, finalize a staff, and hit the portal. Again, his stubbornness is his undoing. Meanwhile, Venables had time to find the OC he wanted and get him set up.

John Smith definitely didn’t adapt, that’s why he only had a team ranked third in the nation his final year. Derp. John Smith didn’t like NIL, but he absolutely adapted and took some badass transfers on his way out. Gundy needs to adapt and I’m sure he will find a way to do so. Cut out the negative BS, no one appreciates it.

John Smith is a bad example. He inherited a blood blood program in a sport that conferences have to beg schools to field a team and didn’t compete up to our historical standards

There are plenty of examples of "NIL disaster" that's the complete opposite. There are teams that are throwing NIL $$ at every shiny thing like they're at the strip club. Turns out you need some semblance of a cohesive team to actually win. Those shiny parts only work if they fit together. Everybody clamoring over the newest "free agent" QB transfer; for every Cam Ward, there are the big name 5 star or already proven guys that transfer somewhere else and it just...doesn't work as good.

Said coach is also ASU alumni, something our fans are currently unhappy about…..

Now, if Gundy and his staff showed half the amount of fire that Dillingham does, we’d win more and fans wouldn’t be as upset when we don’t.
