Big 12 Basketball Tournament

Well, the season is over. It was ugly and not to the OSU standard. Now we wait to see what happens with our beloved program.

I hope the kids stick around, there is a nice young nucleus there needing some direction.

If he is in fact staying for another year I expect to find out pretty soon. They won't want to let the question linger. The longer it takes the better the chance he leaves.
If we're keeping Boynton, the AD needs to do some serious damage control to keep people coming to games. I expect a massive staff overhaul at the very least. Maybe even a restructuring of his contract.

Maybe I don’t have the contract details correct and I’m not looking at this right but as I understand it’s $2.5MM/yr through 27/28 season or 4 more seasons for a total contract value of $10,000,000. The buyout is rumored to go to 66.6% on 4/1

If he stays through 27/28 we pay him $10,000,000.

If we part ways 4/1/24 we pay him $6,700,000.

If he coaches 24/25 and we part ways 4/1/25 we pay him $2.5MM for next yr plus 66.6% of $7.5MM for 25/26, 26/27 & 27/28

That is $2.5MM + $4.995MM($2.5x3x2/3)
Or $7,495,000.

So if my assumptions and math are correct we actually pay him in total $795,000 more to coach us next year and then let him go 4/1/25.

I realize we would still have to pay another coach but at this point 4/1/24 is the cheapest his contract gets in terms of overall impact to the athletic department unless you ride him all the way and don’t spend money on buyout plus another coach.

Plus the sooner you pull the trigger the better the odds are that it gets negotiated down plus offset by future employment.

We should know within the next week or so. If you are keeping him, which just means you can’t afford the buyout, you already know that so why wait on announcing? It only drives more speculation and hurts recruiting. If we hear nothing for a couple weeks, I’d think that indicates good news and Chad is just waiting for the reduced buyout.

Thanks for the math! Have to assume Chad knows this too.
