US VP Vance Undercuts Def Sec Hegseth by Threatening Putin With U.S. Troops Forcing Hegseth to Withdraw Earlier Remarks

Vice President JD Vance issued a stark warning to Russia, threatening the potential deployment of U.S. troops to Ukraine—a move that directly undercut Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth who was forced into an embarrassing reversal on his earlier remarks.

In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Vance said the U.S. may take military action if Russian President Vladimir Putin fails to negotiate a deal that guarantees Ukraine’s long-term independence.

“There are economic tools of leverage, there are of course military tools of leverage” Washington could use to pressure Putin, the vice president told the newspaper.

“There are any number of formulations, of configurations, but we do care about Ukraine having sovereign independence,” he said.

Hegseth had firmly ruled out any U.S. troop involvement in Ukraine, but was left scrambling to walk back his first statement on the world stage after a powerful backlash.

Criticism must have also come from inside the administration because the next time he was in front of the cameras he had radically changed his tune. “Any security guarantee must be backed by capable European and non-European troops,” he said.

“Everything is on the table in any future peace talks between Ukraine and Russia, including Ukraine’s aspirations to join NATO,” the defense secretary said Thursday in a major shift in tone. He added that negotiations were being led by President Donald Trump.

“What he decides to allow or not allow is at the purview of the leader of the free world, of President Trump. So I’m not going to stand at this podium and declare what President Trump will do or won’t do,” he said.

Trump announced that he had spoken. to Putin by phone on Wednesday morning, and said they agreed to work “very closely” with each other to kickstart peace negotiations “immediately.”

Economist Mark Toth, a national security and foreign policy analyst, told The Daily Beast that the contradictory messaging from Vance and Hegseth signals a deliberate White House strategy to keep adversaries—and allies—off balance.

“The White House appears determined to be unpredictable, using the ‘fog of war’—or in this case, the ‘fog of negotiations’—to maintain leverage as they work toward their endgame in Europe,” Toth said. “Ultimately, this approach sets the stage for a strategic pivot to pressing national security threats emerging from the Indo-Pacific and Iran.”

However, he warned that such tactics come with significant risks. “One final word of caution—fog, especially self-created fog on the battlefield, always risks its creator becoming lost in it as well. Trump and his national security team would be wise to remember that.”

The contradictory messaging from the White House may also be part of the strategy to pressure NATO member states into raising their defense spending from 2 percent to 5 percent of their GDP, Toth said.

“This mixed messaging by senior White House officials was likely intentional in design,” he said. “What better way to do that than scaring Brussels that under a Trump Administration going forward that Europe is going to increasingly be more on its own when it comes to confronting Putin’s ambitions in Eastern Europe?”
@Donnyboy ain’t gonna like that.

I'm torn on whats going on right now. Every time Trump opens his mouth some clown sounding crap pours out. What Elon is doing on the other hand has needed to be done for the last 40 years. Our debt and unfunded liabilities are gonna destroy this country if the spending doesn't get under control. Yeah it's a sh!t show but one that needs to play out.
No wonder Musk's son said to Trump, "I want you to shut your fucking mouth up." Meantime,

That's exactly where I'm at. Learning about USAID has been an eye opener.
Honest question, what have you learned about USAID that has been an eye opener, and where did you learn about it? Was it from a legitimate news source or was it from Facebook and/or twiX?

I am against government waste, fraud, and abuse, and I know there is some out there. However, most of the examples I have read from DOGE so far have been wildly exaggerated and/or false and misleading. I have also learned that some farm state Republicans now want to walk back or transfer the responsibility of some of the programs that were cut at USAID to the USDA because they involve the purchase of grain and other commodities from US farmers.

Like I said I am all for eliminating waste, fraud, and abuse, and if someone can show me legitimate examples I may change my mind. However, I am appalled by the indiscriminate mass firings and dismantling of entire agencies regardless of whether or not they served important functions. It may sound like all fun and games to some, but these are people's lives, American lives.

I wonder what unemployment numbers are gonna look like in 3 months. It seems like alot of jobs the public sector is shedding and if the private sector is struggling like the administration contends they won't be able to pick up the slack

They fired our Admin Officer today.

After years of having crappy incompetent admin, we finally got a guy who gets s#!t done.
Retired Master Sergeant. Super nice guy. Respectful. And he's gone.
All of us docs are in shock.
Friend of a coworker works for NOAA. She was the admin for their #3 for a couple years until she got tired of the constant travel and wanted to have a kid. So she took an internal transfer to a different position and someone messed up her paperwork so she got flagged as new hire last year. Now she is wrongly in probationary period, fearing for her job while very pregnant.

I think something similar happened to this guy. He took this job which was a promotion from his prior job so that put him on probation again. Same thing happened to me when I went from part-time to full-time they restarted my probationary period. Seemed stupid to me as I was doing the exact same job.

The Trump administration has suggested to Ukraine that the U.S. be granted 50% ownership of the country’s rare earth minerals, and signaled an openness to deploying American troops there to guard them if there’s a deal with Russia to end the war, four U.S. officials say.

Officials at the civilian agency that oversees the nation's nuclear weapons stockpile were given hours to fire hundreds of employees, and workers were shut out of email as termination notices arrived. But some people who were told they were terminated never received written notification. "Nobody knows if they're fired or not," one employee told NPR.

Even worse incompetence: they accidentally fired, then apparently today un-fired, hundreds of the people who manage America's nuclear weapons.

BREAKING: The Trump Administration is now rescinding their firing of dozens of DOE staffers after it turned out they help run our nuclear program.

The incompetence is staggering

Speaking of farm state republicans, being that DOGE wants to cut the federal government to the bone, why are we subsidizing crop insurance for farmers? Everyone else running a business pays their own insurance. Why can't farmers figure that out as part of their business model?

Just seems as usual, they want to cut the spending that they want to cut. There is no honesty, no principle, no backbone.

I actually like the idea of defense of Ukraine in exchange for interest in rare earth metal.

That’s a helluva a whiplash from what Hegseth was saying earlier this week.

There is a difference, legally, between waste, fraud, and public appropriations that I might disagree with.

What I’ve seen so far from DOGE so far has been calling public appropriations that they disagree with “fraud”. That isn’t fraud. It may be wasteful, it may have been dumb policy appropriations by Congress, but it isn’t fraud.
