Trump 47

If I was a billionaire with a bunch of billionaire buddies, inflation would not be my no. issue, either. Since Trump lies or changes his mind a lot, maybe he will decide not to add to the inflation by imposing tariffs. If he does anyway, he ought to have enough mercy to keep food out of it.

Colombia to send presidential plane to Honduras to pick up migrants from US flights the hill

...
Colombian President Gustavo Petro has arranged for the presidential plane to facilitate the “dignified return of Colombian nationals who were to arrive in the country today in the morning hours, coming in from deportation flights,” read a statement released on Sunday.

“This measure is in response to the government’s commitment to guarantee dignified conditions. In no way have Colombians, as patriots and subjects of rights, been or will be banished from Colombian territory,” the statement continued.
Earlier Sunday, President Trump slapped Colombia with 25 percent tariffs on all goods coming into the U.S., and he issued a travel ban and immediate visa revocations on “Government Officials, and all Allies and Supporters,” among other measures, after the South American country rejected two planes carrying migrants.

Petro hit Trump back by ordering an increase of import tariffs on goods from the United States by 25 percent.

“American products whose price will rise within the national economy must be replaced by national production, and the government will help in this regard,” Petro said in a Sunday afternoon post.
...
“The US cannot treat Colombian migrants as criminals,” Petro posted Sunday to the social platform X. “I deny the entry of American planes carrying Colombian migrants into our territory.”

Wrong assessment. The issue wasn't taking Colombians in Colombia. The issue was the US flying them in military transport planes after Brazil complained that their citizens were handcuffed in cargo planes and denied restrooms.

Mr. Petro’s office said in a statement that the presidential plane would be made available to transport the migrants who had been scheduled to arrive on the military planes. Representatives for Colombia’s Foreign Ministry did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The immediate snag with the deportation flights appeared to be that U.S. military planes were transporting the undocumented migrants, a U.S. military official said on Sunday.

The two U.S. aircraft that were denied the ability to land in Colombia were Air Force C-17 transport planes. One turned around and returned to San Diego; the other flew back to Texas.

If the migrants were shifted to a commercial or charter flight, at least until diplomatic clearances had been settled for the government planes, the issue might resolve itself, said the military official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss operational matters.

President Petro’s remarks came in response to a post about the treatment of Brazilian deportees. Brazil’s foreign ministry complained of “degrading treatment” of its citizens after 88 migrants arrived in the country handcuffed on Friday and some complained of mistreatment after not being given water or allowed to use the bathroom during the flight.

Yes, we will forever remember the 1-26-25 trade war between Colombia and the United States and the horrific consequences on both economies. War is hell.

Gee, Trump declares what Colombia will do. Funny, the Colombian President's X page still has this long diatribe. I don't suspect you speak Spanish but, needless to say, it sounds much more like FU than "sorry about the confusion."

We will see if the idiot-n-chief doesn't have trade wars with allies.

Given the stance of the Colombian President and they fact that the Trump Administration is already talking about new tariffs on Mexico and Canada prior to negotiations, I'm not gonna withdrawal my statement just yet. I think there is a lot better chance that you will be paying 25% more for the crow you are gonna eat than me.

The tariffs will probably include drugs, including antibiotics so that will suck with so many drug prices already plenty high enough. America won't be great again until much more of the various things needed are manufactured in America.

The stance of the Colombian President lasted maybe 2 hours before he bent the knee. We can only hope that all of these future trade wars don't drag on like this one did.

bend the knee? or act more like a mature leader and not a middle schooler? at least one of these leaders wanted to avert a trade war, knowing it was in the best interest of his country...and is it wrong for a president to want people treated with respect?!...(not everyone on the planes had criminal record, hundreds did not)...

from BBC story:

Petro, a keen user of social media, posted on X that he had "barred US planes carrying Colombian migrants from entering our territory" because "the US can't treat Colombian migrants like criminals".

He demanded that the US put procedures in place for migrants to be "treated with dignity".

He also said he was ready to send the presidential plane to the US to transport the migrants.

Colombia has accepted deportation flights from the US in the past. In 2024, 124 planes carrying deported migrants from the US landed in the country.

But President Petro appeared to object to the return of deportees on military rather than civilian flights - and to the way the migrants may be treated on those military flights.

In his posts on X, Petro referenced a news video showing migrants deported from the US to Brazil, who had been handcuffed and had their feet restrained during the deportation flight.

He said that he would "never allow Colombians to be returned handcuffed on flights".
