The problem is Gundy’s lack of awareness and inability to relate and understand their boundaries leads to a perception that is not good with the players. It also cast a dark cloud over future players.I'm a certified Gundy hater, and maybe I'm being naive, but I really can't imagine Gundy being dumb enough to express racism or hatefulness directly to a player in the middle of the weight room for seemingly no reason. Something seems off about that.
It seems more plausible that he thought it was a funny thing to say, and is just out of touch enough to not realize it would be offensive to that player in that context. Sounds like he didn't have the equity to use that term with Kanion Williams. Maybe he overheard someone else call him that, and thought he could also use that nickname? Maybe a coach called him that in another context?
It’s probably better if you are a white person who is a coach not to say anything with any racial connotations even if it’s not meant to be offensive.
