Gundy Not in Trouble….restructuring

And he still won games and had big 12 championship appearances. A majority of these guys are just now starting to fully buy into NIL. Many coaches and Universities were scared to pull the trigger due to uncertainty from above.
Appearances are not championships. You don’t celebrate participation in college football. One championship in 19 years is nothing to celebrate.

I don’t know where you get your “majority” stat, but any serious program not fully committed to NIL is in serious trouble. The target number I heard on the podcast Hang Up and Listen is $40 million to fund all sports at a university. That’s a ton of dough. So coaches either need to get on board with fundraising, or like Saban, get out of the game.

So give me a list of all these programs/coaches dominating their conference/winning championships outside of the blue bloods with big time money that we will never have? I’d love to see this list.

We will certainly never have competitive NIL budgets if our coach thinks this is still 2020. As someone said earlier, there are a ton of potential coaches who would love the challenge to get us where we need to be. I hope Gundawg has changed, but I really doubt it. Do you think he’ll change his ways?

Honestly, yes I do. With the new staff, it appears they’re attacking the portal harder than ever which is a great sign and leads me to believe NIL will be improving. I know that Gundy is nearing his end, I just wanted him to have the chance to leave in the right way and hand it over to the next guy. I’m a Gundy supporter but I’m also not blind to the areas he falls short in and needs to improve. Hell we all need to improve. I’m hoping with what happened a few weeks ago, everything is headed in a very positive direction.

My take and it’s only an opinion and I am a Gundy fan going back to the day he came in at QB as a true freshman.

Gundy loves OSU.
Anonymous posters on a message board have little idea of his work ethic or complacency/motivation levels.
Take away class rankings and look solely at player scores Gundy’s HS recruiting is materially unchanged over the last 12 years. Using 247 our avg player rating is between 86.5 and 87.5. Give or take a yr or 2 and a tenth of a point here or there.

OSU is and always has been a mega booster builder. NIL is woefully under funded but that’s a separate discussion. In 2023 Gundy struck gold through the portal w Leon Johnson, Goodlow, Brooks, Kirkland, Josiah Johnson (1 of my favorite cowboy football players ever) and Bowman (looking at 2023 only). We also pulled in Stribbling and were getting mileage out of a xfer from the yr before in Xavier Benson. Those guys practically cost nothing and most were huge keys to our success.

Gundy tried to replicate that because our very limited NIL had to primarily go to 3 players in Gordon, Martin and Oliver. We lost Martin and Oliver for a combined 17 starts out of 24. Ollie was limited bc of Line, OC, QB, Oline Coach and to an extent the position our DC put the offense in.

I would guess more than 50% and maybe 2/3s of our NIL money produced at less than 15-20% of the results it was intended to buy. Just an absolute awful ROI.

Can you imagine the absolute crapfest this board would have been after the Big12 championship game if Gundy said no to Ollie and Martin and they xfer’d?

We have got to get our NIL at least up to $7MM per year and probably north of $10MM. We can dump all the coaches we want but no one will come, achieve and stay if we don’t get our NIL up. That takes all of us.

I hope you are right. He's our guy, at least for another year, so of course I hope he can find some of that 2011 magic.

BTW, saying we all need to improve does not justify his poor performance this year. He needs to be a better football coach.

Where we at as of today? And I assume you mean OSU NIL needs $10mm for football. How much does OSU sports need overall?

Those are good ?s. Seems like it was reported that we were around $4-$4.5MM for football only and I’ve read where basketball was below $1MM.

Either on top of revenue sharing or if revenue sharing isn’t a go Football alone needs to be at $10MM. KState was at $7.5 last yr and Tech looks like they are printing money (thank you Permian Basin) this yr. Tech also signed the Stanford pitcher in softball at a rumored $650k per year (which I would bet is higher than our entire Softball budget but Kenny is the Man). Wrestling seems to be going great but Iowa is throwing money (seems like they are having room problems though).

And finally Basketball. BYU was/is on the #1 HS player and he is rumored to be going for $4-$4.5MM for a one and done.

I wonder what a Cade Cunningham type player do for this squad that we have now.

You mention the BYU recruit and I’ve seen the same numbers thrown around. At what point does the math just not work? With a decent number of athletic departments running in the red, some of these numbers are crazy. $650k for a softball pitcher? Does that sport even break even at TT?

BYU may be the exception to the rule since they are backed by the LDS Church. I am sure they are using their athletic programs as outreach to attract new members to the school/church. Paying players and having good/great teams may actually have a positive ROI for them.

That sport breaks even no where. It’s time everyone realize there are absolutely no programs in any sport that actually make money
