Gundy Not in Trouble….restructuring

Carson Cunningham actually had the ZRob stuff on his podcast yesterday that there had been real conversations and mutual interest. So much for the crowd that was saying “Oh no, what will OSU do without Gundy?!! Who would want to come here?”. Well the answer is just one of the best up and comer OCs in the NFL out of the Sean McVey tree. Doubt he would come for the OC and HC in waiting as those typically don’t work out very well, although if you can give him similar pay, the case could be made for better stability than the NFL.

Mutual interest doesn’t mean that he would have come to OSU.

I would/would've love(d) to see ZRob as HC or OC/HCIW...buuuuutttttt I highly doubt that happens...don't know him or his mindset, but if I'm proving my worth in the NFL and am having success, I'm staying there (NFL)...the highest level you can go...
Just kinda depends on what your goals are I guess. If it is financial, outside of the Andy Reid, Mike Tomlin, and Sean McVay types, you can make comparable money at a P4 school or possibly more. Zach Taylor for example, who’s been to a Super Bowl and had decent success is making 4.5mil. That’s mid to lower part of the B12 money. There is also the stability aspect. If you start a season 2-7 in the NFL or drop a 5-12, no matter if it is your first year as HC or what last years success was, there’s a good chance they’ll get rid of you.

Zac has a young family with two little kids, so possibly establishing himself somewhere he’s familiar with long term could definitely be appealing. With the reports he was entertaining conversations. If his goals were just to be a HC in the NFL, I don’t think we’d be hearing “mutual interest”.

first of all, I have seen no reports of how it was mutual interest, that is, no quotes from ZRob...average top 20 NFL HC salary is $8.98 mil and average top 20 NCAA HC salary is $8.99 mil...Kirby smart highest at $13.28 mil, while 6 NFL HC's make more than that...

You’re not going to hear direct quotes, he’s in the middle of a season. Likely conversations through an agent. Do you ever hear direct quotes from candidates commenting on an opening…LOL!

Yeah, the top longtime guys in the NFL like Reid, Harbaugh, Tomlin who are making near 20 bring up that NFL avg. Gundy makes more than about 20 NFL HCs. Zac could come in making between 5-6 (quite a bit less than Gundy) and still be making more than 15 or so NFL HCs including Mike McDaniel, Zach Taylor, Kevin Stefanski, Todd Bowles…

so we just take a reporters words for it that there was mutual interest...LOL!
there's no way to know how much they would've offered him, but if it's close to the same, I'm choosing NFL! Heck, if it's $5 (OSU) and $3 or 4 (NFL) I'm still choosing NFL!

That’s how we usually hear about these things, through reporters and not the actual parties.

I’m the opposite, not as big on NFL. Young family, more stability, my Alma Mater, familiar faces, maybe coaching/working with former teammates, and a bunch of money goes a long way in Stillwater America. That would definitely have appeal to me.

Anyway, not happening, at least right now, so discussion is moot.

The Bengals are a notoriously cheap organization, so Taylor’s salary isn’t surprising.

I’m curious to see how Zac does in Atlanta, particularly if they move on to Penix at WB. I think that’s going to give a lot clearer picture of his abilities than working under McVay with a HOF veteran QB.

As others have said though, it’s hard to know what a guy’s motivation is about.

I'd love for ZMFR to come here as HCIW/OC, but I don't see it happening. Looking at it objectively, would he be on the radar at all if he weren't an alum? Being a Cowboy is great, but it shouldn't be the main deciding factor.

And tbh, it's would be a really tough situation for him. Let's say he comes to OSU and is our savior. That means he should plan on being in Stillwater for at least 10 years, and who knows after that...? Let's say he comes to OSU and flames out after 3-4 seasons. His NFL career would essentially be done. He could probably get a job at a much lower level school, but that's a HUGE demotion from the trajectory he's on right now. If he fails at the NFL level, there are still a ton of college teams that would take him.

This right here

There are very few Jim Harbaughs

Re: my comment above. Cousins has thrown for 8 INT’s & 0 TD’s in their last 4 games, & ATL is now behind TB in their sorry division.

Working under one of the recognized offensive geniuses in the NFL (Bienemy,Zrob) doesn’t necessarily make you one of them.

I’m not saying he wouldn’t be a great choice, but man, the propensity for people to fall in love with an alum as a savior is, well, soooo college.

Well, we are talking about college ball. We want who we want.

Yes, are you rambling about NY6 games again?

Because the discussion is about a guy coaching in the NFL and why he’s a great candidate.
No. I’m talking about winning games and being able to hang on to a coach.
