Anymore in the college and NFL game the Head Coach is really spending half his time doing the CEO things that don’t relate to Xs and Os! That is why Coordinators, both in the college game and the pros are SO IMPORTANT BECAUSE THEY, COORDINATORS, ESSENTIALLY RUN ALL THREE PHASES OF THE TEAM, offense, defense and special teams!!! My best example is look at what has happened to Kansas when Lepolds long time right hand, Kotlenicki (O coordinator) was hired away by Penn State! They won seven games in 2022 and nine games last year mostly because of offense, now this year they may be even worse than OSU as they are 2-6!
The problem is that we can't afford to pay a top 10 salary to all of our coordinators, so OSU is a stepping stone. This is why I believe its so important for Gundy to accept having to find new ones every two years due to their success. His strategy should be to hire a Jim Knowles every two years on
each side of the ball. What I mean by that is, he should seek proven, successful coordinators from the level just below OSU, and understand that they'll leave due to their success in 2-3 seasons. That's what we can afford, but it doesn't expose us to the same risk as hiring DII or inexperienced people. This would only be a good thing for OSU, but, according to Gundy, would mean more work for him. This strategy would signal that he cares more about winning football games than huntin' and fishin', which is a reasonable expectation given his chosen profession and salary.
Instead, he prioritized his work/life balance, and goes after lower level guys that he knows will stay loyal to OSU longer OR ones that don't succeed quickly enough to leave after 1-2 seasons. This is an obvious move to reduce his own workload while doing just enough to maintain his pay. It's disrespectful to the fans, players, and university.
OSU has had the most success using the former strategy, and Gundy went AWAY from it to protect his own workload and schedule.
If he wants to continue doing stuff this way, we need to DRASTICALLY reduce his salary, and all accept our slow decay to irrelevance. Who actually wants that?
