Changes Need to be Made

Unless this was late archery season it tells me everything I need to know. I'm sorry but a football coach at this level shouldn't have time to deer hunt.
It was a few years ago, he may have still just been wr coach. I do remember it was also a bye week. I didn't think it was inappropriate at the time.

Looking at the box score this morning and something really jumped out at me. 90.5% of our tackles were solo tackles...this is unacceptable. For comparison, our last 5 games were 62.9, 69.5, 76.4, 59 and 53.3% of tackles were solo tackles.
Defenders aren't swarming, they arent getting off blocks and guys are jogging alongside the ball carrier (Daniels does this constantly) instead of attempting to actually get there. You miss a lot more tackles when.every attempt is 1v1 instead of vs a group.

How many plays do you see where the RB is untouched weaving through half our defense because no one makes an effort to get off a block, or there's no pursuit from elsewhere on the field.

The Defense is lazy. Not sure if that's Nardo, position coaches, Grad Assistants, Gundy or whatever, but it's embarrassing to watch.

—> who would want to play for this guy? Hey go look in the mirror at why you suck. Don’t blame others, it’s your fault. I know what I’m doing trust me. Guys just get out of their gaps has been on repeat since ummm Knowles left. He preaches D&T (discipline and toughness) yet he bashes them about not being disciplined. That jackass makes $8M+ and can’t even watch the play clock with 20 coaches on the headsets and call a damn timeout. He is checked out and has been for years. His sideline demeanor and energy sucks. Time to move on!!!!!!
He was so close to catching that we need a mobile QB to run. "The DE keeps crashing down on the RB." Yep. There's no threat of the QB ever holding on and being able to go anywhere with it. They are reading the run (i.e., not well hidden and predictable play calls) and ignoring Bowman so the just go straight to the RB.

That's why we ran so much better across the board with Rangel, he was pulling it, the DE had to honor him and was opening up Ollie for bigger runs. Get Bowman out and Smith in next week. Sorry Alan, thanks for your time and glad your stars on your last game weren't bad. It's not you, it's just not working for us any more.

Anymore in the college and NFL game the Head Coach is really spending half his time doing the CEO things that don’t relate to Xs and Os! That is why Coordinators, both in the college game and the pros are SO IMPORTANT BECAUSE THEY, COORDINATORS, ESSENTIALLY RUN ALL THREE PHASES OF THE TEAM, offense, defense and special teams!!! My best example is look at what has happened to Kansas when Lepolds long time right hand, Kotlenicki (O coordinator) was hired away by Penn State! They won seven games in 2022 and nine games last year mostly because of offense, now this year they may be even worse than OSU as they are 2-6! 🤔

If we swing and miss with Robinson, kotlenicki would be a good hire

Day after the season ends, or sooner, Chad needs to walk in and say both coordinators are gone plus Dickey, Hammer and Duffie at minimum. Replacements for the coordinators will be AD approved after vetting. Mike needs to feel micro managed like he hasn’t been in some time.
Shrum needs to summon Gundy ten minutes later and give Gundy an acceptable list that agents have already contacted.

obviously the OC and DC need to change...do I expect it to happen? NO...will I be surprised if it happens? YES...we need to see Smith in these final games!!...if I were Gundy, I would take over OC duties now, even if he wants to keep it hush-hush...I thought he was a good play caller back in the day...(don't tell me it will take away from his HC game duties - standing and looking bored?!?!)

I think it's pretty clear that the players have delivered their message to Gundy by the way they played. No need to drop by the office to "talk about it". Went over Gundy's head.
As the millionaire CEO of the football business, his pompous attitude makes me sick. If players are struggling and not executing, it is either time to replace them either on the recruiting trail or in the lineup. what 19-year-old who makes $15,000 is going to challenge an ass hat that makes $8 million? Might as well bring your pink sheet if you’re gonna do that lol

The problem is that we can't afford to pay a top 10 salary to all of our coordinators, so OSU is a stepping stone. This is why I believe its so important for Gundy to accept having to find new ones every two years due to their success. His strategy should be to hire a Jim Knowles every two years on each side of the ball. What I mean by that is, he should seek proven, successful coordinators from the level just below OSU, and understand that they'll leave due to their success in 2-3 seasons. That's what we can afford, but it doesn't expose us to the same risk as hiring DII or inexperienced people. This would only be a good thing for OSU, but, according to Gundy, would mean more work for him. This strategy would signal that he cares more about winning football games than huntin' and fishin', which is a reasonable expectation given his chosen profession and salary.

Instead, he prioritized his work/life balance, and goes after lower level guys that he knows will stay loyal to OSU longer OR ones that don't succeed quickly enough to leave after 1-2 seasons. This is an obvious move to reduce his own workload while doing just enough to maintain his pay. It's disrespectful to the fans, players, and university.

OSU has had the most success using the former strategy, and Gundy went AWAY from it to protect his own workload and schedule.

If he wants to continue doing stuff this way, we need to DRASTICALLY reduce his salary, and all accept our slow decay to irrelevance. Who actually wants that?

We can afford elite coordinators. Knock his salary down to what he has recently earned which would be ~$5M not $8M. That extra $3M would hire the best of the best coordinators on par with Texas Michigan and Bama. We are wasting money on his stupid contract. One Big 12 trophy in 2 decades and a couple bedlam wins which 2 were flukes results in being a top 15 paid coach in the country?? Heck no. He literally has a huge contract because he has politicked his way to a plateau and does the bare minimum. With selling his house, I hope the writing is on the wall and he starts blaming the “new football era” and how when he was coming up “the nil didn’t exist” blah blah. Retire. Ride off into the sunset and take your ultra conservative underperforming staff with you

This season is an epic failure of expectations only outdone by FSU (Norvell is dead man walking). With each passing week and loss, Gundy sounds more and more like a coach that has 'jumped the shark'. Our program is now bigger than Gundy's vision and energy for it. It's time for Weiberg to start the succession process. The theme going fwd needs to be 'perform and be held accountable'. There is too much at stake in the broader college football landscape over the next few years to not course correct NOW. Listening to excuses for this year and running it back with more of the same is nothing short of institutional negligence.
  1. Notify Gundy, that oSu is opting out of the YoY renewal. He is now officially on the clock. Gundy has earned the right to get us out of the hole he's led us into, but under tighter supervision and timeline. YoY improvements MUST be made and the timeline to get back to Big XII Champ contention level is 2 years TOPS otherwise it is 'Thank you for your service'! Consider restructuring his remaining contract to shorten the number of years and with increased performance incentives.
  2. Demand a house cleaning at OC and DC. Since Gundy has been guided by what is easiest for him and blinded by his loyalty, unable to see what the rest of the world sees: the two Coordinators are horrible and too toxic to remain. This is nonnegotiable! Our best years only happened because Boone held Gundy accountable and forced his hand to relinquish OC duties. The result was our two best OCs ever and the foundation upon which Gundy's (false) reputation as a 'high flying gunslinger' was built. Truth is he's a stubborn, arrogant, old school conservative Pat Jones disciple which needs a kick in the arse to change because he currently has no incentive to do so.
  3. Provide the requisite resources needed to go after the BEST coordinators on Power 4 Level. Gundy got lucky with Yurcich, which afforded him to the benefit of the doubt with Sean Gleeson which was a total fail. The recent defensive success of Iowa St and Gundy's overall coaching resume enabled him to sell us on the Nardo hire. @Gundy: You are now 1 for 3 on lower level hires. No more of this apprenticeship crap because you don't like to replace coordinators after getting poached. Hear that knock on Dunn and Nardo's doors? Yeah me neither. They only poach GOOD coordinators.
  4. Make a run at Zach Robinson. He may have his heart set as a lifer in the NFL but you don't know unless you ask. Zach seems to check all the boxes we have in OC, HC succession plan, QB development, and fan excitement.
  5. Insist the new OC and DC get to pick their support staffs and run their schemes. Hire the most qualified and let them do their jobs the way they know how to.
  6. Demand recruitment at higher level. STOP with this recruiting in the mid-40's to 50's ranking. We should be recruiting at a higher level than we do. I've personally heard stories of #1 ranked OK recruit that had heart set on oSu but we hardly gave him the time of day so went elsewhere. This was a player that we would have loved to have. Probably in true Gundy fashion b/c we thought we didn't have a chance. We have a lazy coaching staff mentality when it comes to recruiting. You miss 100% of the shots you don't take and need to prioritize recruiting at higher level. Stop acting like a victim. You're not a G5 school. You've been a top 15 P4 winningest program over last decade+ but recruit nowhere near that range, so it shows how much you can achieve with less. Imagine what you could do with similar type players. Do better because long term success starts at recruiting better.

JBC titles are co-DC and LB coach. Seems like he is more problem than solution.
I will just leave it at this! Knowles probably valued JBCs opinion on different issues when it came to a lot of things regarding our defense and told Gundy to let JBC handle coordinator duties when he left for Ohio State after the Big XII championship game, before we played Notre Dame in Phoenix in 2021! Knowles loved guys that had played and worked under Bill Snyder and Gary Patterson!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 🤔

Would love to see fat pat running the defense. Snyder was a known "workaholic" - no one could keep up with him.
