Glad to have a coach in place. The amount of investment I had in this despite not knowing most of the coaches' names a couple weeks ago is wild. I was all aboard the Danny Sprinkles train, mainly because there was a possibility of him bringing a player I also had never heard of before the NCAA tournament, Great Osobor. That is as Great of a basketball name as I have heard. But Lutz looks like a good hire and I'm excited to see what he does with the portal and getting current players to stay.
All main contributors at W. Kentucky were Seniors except for 6-2 G Don McHenry (JR). He was their leading scorer with 15 ppg.
Excited for the hire, and what it'll bring. Let's start talking about hopes and dreams.
I'm sure you've all heard of the trapezoid of excellence, I'm not really sure what this means, other than the faster or slower you play, the better you have to be. So, while playing fast is fun, and can even be beneficial, playing too fast can be harmful. This year's team was an outlier for Lutz with a pace of 75. The two years at Corpus were around 69. I'm hopeful we settle in somewhere around the 68.5-70 possessions per game. Still a ton of fun to watch, but not overly penalizing.
More importantly, I believe the following statistics should be our goal. These are the averages of the final four teams in the years listed.

A few observations:
- Lutz's 3 year average is better in every category for every one of the past 5 years for OSU except for 2021 FG%. Yes different competition, but also played like competition.
- 3pt shooting needs to improve slightly, which will also improve overall average to be in line with the final four 7 year average.
- Over the past 7 years Lutz's average was better than 4 final teams in at least two categories. (24 NC State - 11 seed, 23 SD State - 5 seed, 21Houston - 2 seed, 17South Carolina - 7 seed)
I think if his OSU teams perform on par with his previous teams, OSU likely receives a 3-5 seed, which all of us would be tickled with.

Was he primarily handler or off ball?
I will be curious to see how he develops a team over a few years. He plays a lot of players, which I have been very critical of Boynton for doing. The most a player has averaged under Lutz is 28.5 minutes.
0-8 against "P6" programs and the closest was an 8 point loss at Minnesota.
Schertz (Indiana State) was the coach I wanted, but I'm good with the hire.

I've never watched them play.
His 2.4 assists led the starters. Team averaged about 13.4 assists a game, which is a little better than half the D1 teams.
He averaged 2.0 TOV per game which led the team.
2P% was 50.5%, so looks like he had a good share of quality shots.
I would guess he was the primary ball handler but the team stats seem to indicate more of an assist-by-team mentality.

The problem with Boynton wasn't the number of players we used, it was the fact those players weren't running any kind of structured offense. We just ran up and down the floor and either lobbed it or passed the ball around until someone jacked up a three. There is a huge difference between playing fast as part of your offensive structure, and playing fast just for the sake of playing fast. Boynton always talked about "pace" but we always seemed out of control when we tried to go fast, especially late in close games. Think of how many careless turnovers we had that ultimately cost us close games. That's probably the #1 reason why we have a new coach right now.

I always thought we did a decent job of getting open shots but nobody could make them consistently. The bigger problem was some of the dumbest turnovers imaginable and Boynton defense early on weee okay but went to complete crap in recent years.
Can't blame all of it on the offense scheme or lack there of. You call them "careless turnovers", but they were often associated with lack of chemistry. How often was a short pass under the basket or a pass at the top that would go straight out of bounds because the player didn't move as the other expected or wasn't ready. Some players had no chemistry with certain players and it showed. They hadn't logged the gametime minutes with each other.
It is a key component with all team sports. Basketball, soccer, hockey, volleyball, football, etc.
