Offense

Our starting QB, who is very good, has only played about 1 game's worth of snaps. Not sure how rusty he'll be our if the O will be in sync. Our backup QB is very talented, but a true freshman. Our receivers are good and our TE's are some of the best in the country. Our RB's are running back by committee. Offensive line has had moments of greatness and moments of failure so far. That's a worry.

Defense

Defense is usually the strength of Utah teams. We're usually very good at stopping the run and pressuring the opposing QB. Mobile QB's who can throw can sometimes give us fits though, especially when we're on the road. Primary question/weakness on defense in my opinion is the defensive backfield. Our LB's "should" be as good as any in the country, but they're not quite producing yet. We shall see there.

Special Teams

Historically our special teams have been very good with some of the best punters of the last decade, great returners, good place kickers. But we missed our first two FG attempts of the season and flubbed another one. Punt returns haven't been as good this season so far as they have been in the past.

Coaching

Coach Whittingham is typically a conservative coach. Loves a good defense and power run game. But this year we all know that passing should be our offensive strength with a veteran QB and very good receivers and tight ends. Our offensive play calling can get extremely predictable, especially if we get a lead.

Admittedly I know very little about OSU. I don't have much of an idea what to expect.

Welcome,

Your team did seem to have some struggles with the kicking game aim the game I watched against Baylor! Are you working with a new kicker and punter this year???

This is what worries me as it presents numerous matchup problems for a 3-3-5 defense.
I wonder how long it takes for nardo to make
adjustments and goto a 4 man front. He should know starting the game that a 3-3-5 struggle against tight ends. Hell, the TCU/UGA national title game showed us that

I swear this fan base doesn't have even a basic understanding of what the 3-3-5 does well and what it is weak against.

First, their star tight end is more of a receiving threat than he is blocking threat. Kuithe is listed as 236 pounds. For reference, Rashad Owens is listed at 230. How does playing a 4 man front help to cover up tight ends in the passing game? Hint: it doesn't. The 3-3-5 actually allows us to keep a more athletic defender on the field to defend against the TE. Bentley and Ryan are their main blocking TEs and pose little threat in the passing game. In fact, no other TE on their roster has more than 2 catches outside of Kuithe.

Second, if they have a blocking TE or two on the field, some adjustments can be made personnel wise or scheme wise. If they have a blocking TE out there, that's one less route runner, and with Safeties as good as Rucker and Daniels are, you can play more cover 1 and put another man in the box. Our line can also slant off the ball and allow for our LBs and Safety to exploit the gaps that the slant creates. We can also change personnel, if needed. The point is that we have flexibility, which is what the 3-3-5 excels at providing.

Third, TCU v. Georgia was not a schematic problem. That was Georgia being one of the best teams ever to step on a collegiate football field and having an overwhelming talent advantage. Also, if the 3-3-5 was a problem against TEs, how does TCU beat Michigan who routinely played 3 TEs, which included one that would be drafted in the 2nd round that spring?

Please, read up about the 3-3-5 and what it does well and were it is weak. Here's a place to start, but it's certainly not the only resource.

Thank you for the write up. What do you make of the following development?

Just a note that Utah's QB was in practice today throwing so he's likely back for our game. Thamel noted that Rising has been wearing a glove on his throwing hand during practice.“He had a dislocated finger on his throwing hand, and my understanding, there were some stitches near that finger,” he said on College Football Live.“Those injuries are obviously healing, so will he or won’t he have a glove on his throwing hand in Stillwater is one of the big questions we’ll be watching in pregame warmups.”

By the sounds of it, it sounds like y'all are going to try to play him while he is still injured. Do you feel that is preferable to playing Wilson?

I’ve always enjoyed watching Utah play, possibly because there are so many similarities between our programs. They have obviously been good and well coached for a couple of decades now. Very disciplined, you have to beat them, they won’t beat themselves! I literally have no idea what to expect this weekend so I’m not even going to try to predict.

The one factor that I haven’t heard anyone mention on any the dozens of different prognostication videos or anywhere else in the media is the temperature on Saturday. It’s going to be somewhere between 97F -100F actual temperature during the game and humid. That’s going to equate to somewhere around 145F to 160F temp on the field. The Cowboys are used to practicing and playing in these conditions. I’m not sure how much that’s going to affect the stamina or heat tolerance of the Utah players. Could be a ton of cramps and/or heat exhaustion by players on that side of the field if they’re not conditioned for it.
