Tariffs targeted at specific products that we manufacture here but China can make cheaper. That's not even close to the same thing thing as just blanket tariffs on everyone based solely on the total trade deficit of goods... It's laughable you all even think there is a comparison here.

We need American Jobs back in America. If this can do it, I am all for it. This is a huge attempt to help the middle class but I doubt we have the stomach or fortitude as a country to stick with it. Every politician except the orange one has benefited from business as usual watching the rich get richer. Even Bernie is a multimillionaire. The Dow five years ago today was 24,719. Today it is 38,314. People have gotten greedy and can handle only good news. The people who don’t give a shit about the stock market are the poor and lower middle class who are not in the market, they are left behind. But watch the protesters today out screaming DT is all about the billionaires.
Bernie Sanders about being a millionaire: "I wrote a best-selling book. If you write a best-selling book, you can be a millionaire, too."
Trump has made a ton of money in the past few years, so don't act like all of this is out of his altruistic nature. His truth social and crypto ventures doubled his net worth in the past year so a big chunk of his wealth is from stuff his handlers created out of thin air.
It's been said time and time again but we abandoned manufacturing decades ago and I don't think those jobs are coming back. Right or wrong it's simply cheaper to make something elsewhere and import it here. It will take years to build the infrastructure to bring all of that back and most of us would prefer not to be in a prolonged depression while they happens. If you want to build the economy here find something new to make. That takes education and talent-if he really wants to make a positive mark on the country he should focus on that.

8% of employment cost is health care. The average worker pays 11% of salary toward health care (which means lower income pays far higher and higher income a bit less). If Trump wanted to help the poor and middle class, he fixes health care not crashes the economy.
We have switched from a manufacturing economy to a services economy. We run goods deficits and services surpluses with other nations (Trump ignored our services surplus when calculating tariffs).
If the goal was to return manufacturing jobs, it should have been targeted tariffs in industries that have either a national security interest or that we felt we were being unfairly targeted. But, a tariff on Australia (less manufacturing than us) or a tariff on Bangladesh (no tariff will make us able to complete for $2 t-shirts) doesn't make sense other than to hurt the economy.
