Steve Lutz era begins tonight

Some very encouraging stats:

45% from 3
38 rebounds
11 steals.
87% from the FT line

Cut down on the 14 turnovers and continue the effort and this team will be in a lot of games.
From what I can recall the turnovers weren't a lot of unforced errors. Feels like a lot of them were people driving into the lane and the ball getting poked away. Clean up the offense a little and those probably drop dramatically.

Thought the crowd (especially students) was pretty good for a late tip.

Offense-Good off ball movement. Don’t recall 1 high ball screen w 3 guys motionless. Shot selection was good. Post entry was good and from elbow down and once we dumped it down there was good motion away from the ball. Only a couple of bad passes and we cut way down on our live ball turnovers. Also, maybe bc it was Green Bay we had guys positioning for offensive rebounds and actually collected the board. Some have mentioned how we were good at screening off help side, but I thought we were a tad aggressive a couple of times and got away with clear outs. I think this staff will clean the aggressiveness of that up while keeping that a part of our game.

Bryce has strung together 2 consistent outings. I think it’s bc of the motion on offense and he’s not asked to iso and create separation on his own. He only got too deep one time and I don’t remember him squirreling the ball away off his dribble.

Defensively these kids hustle. We got beat a couple of times but help was generally there and the man best kept w the play. GB didn’t get too many uncontested attempts at the rim. We also seem to be more old school in forcing the action back to the lane vs giving up baseline. Only remember giving up baseline off the dribble once and only one back door cut. After both Lutz and staff were coaching up both players and also offside help.

GB #9&13 hit some really contested 3s or off the step back. Take away 2 of those from each player and it’s a 20 point game. I don’t think Doug gets that on a typical night from either of those kids.

And finally you can tell these kids are being coached and taught basketball principles which leads to basketball IQ. I’d say bonehead decisions were down by almost 90%. We lost our way on their press one time, closed out poorly on a couple of 3 point shooters and got too deep w the dribble a couple of times. But all in all I was excited about teaching basketball. Not just go do it but “here’s why you go do it.”

GB had some nice sets. Their sideline out of bounds on the offensive end was particularly good. They got 8-10 points off those.

All in all I feel like this team can get to 15 -18 total wins and 6-10 conference wins. Recruit well out of HS and portal and next year push those numbers up by 2-4 and you are talking tourney. Keep the momentum and by yr 3 we are top 6 in the best conference.

One thing I appreciated was late in the game we had a put back slam. Players started to get hyped, didn’t get back on defense, and gave up a wide open three. Lutz immediately called a time out.

Great point I completely forgot about that.

Listening to the pregame on the way to the game Dave pointed out how attention to detail was important to Coach Lutz. They talked about this for a while. Your point is a good example of this

Interesting stats from last night.

3FG%-45.5%
FG%-42%
FT%-87.5%
13 assists on 29 makes
19 OB on 43 (40 FG) missed shots

Only gave up 3 OB on 30 (26FG) missed shots.

Thompson played the most minutes at 30. He had ZERO turnovers. Only 1 assist but 2 steals. 5 rebounds. And had 22 points on 9-13 shooting including 4-5 from 3.

Let’s judge Lutz after he has 18 straight winning seasons.

And let's never anoint him God of the Athletic Department and provide another assinine contract like the guy with those winning seasons with only 1 conference championship, 3 second place finishes and a 4-15 record against instate rival.
