OT: General CFB Thread

All throughout the bb tourney the NCAA ran an ad about sports gambling and encouraging people not to harass or abuse student athletes online over their performances because they cost you a bet.

While that’s a noble sentiment, it’s not going to be reality.

Tennessee QB holding out for spring ball amidst NIL negotiations.

My god, here we are.😒

The portal closes on 4/25, so what leverage does he have if he’s not in the portal and the school doesn’t meet his demands by 4/25?

He’s got to jump into the portal on 4/16 to have any leverage, correct?

With no real transfer rules (that I'm aware of, i.e. redshirting), I would think he could simply enroll anywhere for the summer term and begin working with his receivers - "unsupervised," of course.

I thought that was the whole point of the portal window?🤔

Rumor is his dad is shopping him. Huepel found out when Oregon coach called him to give him the heads up.

This story’s much bigger than the mediocre QB involved, & highlights yet again how broken this thing is.

Kid had a $2.4 million NIL deal in place, just demands $4million & UT says no, and he just walks away.

How do these deals have no teeth? We’ve seen schools not follow through on what was promised-Jordan Rashada is suing Florida right now, and now a player backing out.

This is insane and totally unsustainable.

3 things that could help:

  1. Make the contracts actually binding. If a kid signs one and then backs out, they have to sit a year.
  2. If a school poaches another school’s player, they pay that school the NIL value for the player. It’s crazy that a school identifies, recruits and develops a player and then an Alabama comes in and says the player’s market value is $1million (random number), and the school that developed him to that point is just left with nothing.
  3. Install a Commissioner and stop letting 2 conferences from dictating everything. All of the universities receive federal dollars and the leaders are currently asking congress to get involved. It’s time to do so. This is a multi billion dollar $$$ business, not some club sport.
Oh, and the QB is rumored to be heading to Riley & USC.😒

If we stick w the revenue cap of 20.5 (I realize there’s an escalator) and put teeth in NIL where it actually restricts collectives, we are a season or two away from the players in major conferences “striking.” Don’t know what that looks like, but I can see handfuls on each P4 team doing something.
No way they get satisfied w that small of “cap.”

We need player contracts yesterday.

I feel the perversion of NIL deals morphing into collectives ran by the schools is the problem.

I had no problem with an independent company paying players outside the school setting (Gatorade, Toyota, T-Mobile, etc)

When the school is running the NIL collective (either directly or by proxy) It's an employee-employer relationship; There are few protections for either party, and Football is a high risk for injury line of work. It is absolutely asinine for this collective era to be wide open without any structure.

I love college football, I feel it promotes/ entertain the university and local community. But without appropriate local oversight and larger oversight of all universities involved, it's a ticking time bomb.

Between NIL roster transitions and nonstop sports betting ads; college football feels a lot more gross.

I'd also be more sunshine and cheer if we didn't go 3-9 last year.

Deion has no shame, & CU has officially sold its soul.

Retiring the jersey of a QB who went 13-12 in his two years? Insanity! I don’t blame former players for being pissed about this.

Hunter did win a Heisman, which is vastly different.

For the school to do this so quickly just looks small time to me.
How about a coach w a 13-12 record and 8-10 in conference getting >$10MM and then this.

his ability to turn to victimhood either, lol.

He says ‘if his name wasn’t Sanders, this wouldn’t even be a discussion’ & ‘it’s personal (the criticism)’.

Positively shameless. No other school in the country would do this for a player of Shaddeur’s caliber, none, let alone immediately after their college career is over.

We all know winning covers a multitude of sins, but this is a major misstep with former players and some in the CU alumni base. I work with a couple of big CU donors and this is the first time I’ve heard them question how much power they’ve given to Deion. This simply reinforces their fear that he’s gonna bolt and he did this as soon as he could and it’s done forever now.

He’s going to bolt, and he will leave nothing behind.
