OT: General CFB Thread

Been an issue for years. Heard SEC guys crying about the 8 they’re playing and how it’s hurting their 2 & 3 loss teams’ CFP chances.

The ONLY reason the SEC isn't at nine games right now is that ABC/ESPN wouldn't up the payout for the ninth game. Going to nine games was a proposed solution to keep the traditional rivalries when TX/OU joined, but the schools voted to stay at eight when it couldn't get the additional payout.

Doesn’t change the fact they stayed at 8 for years, or that SEC guys were bitching about 8 on Sirius.

I’ve said for years that other conferences should do the same and schedule Wofford in November, & that playing another conference game than other conferences do just guarantees half the teams in your conference one more loss. It sucks that the big 12 has been more about competition through the years.

A 6-5 OU team is listed as a big win for 2of the SEC teams on the fence on the CFP show.

You can’t make this up.
And the top team in the sec, ut, has zero wins against a team that is currently ranked. The closest they have is their win against Florida who has 4 pts in the AP poll.

Their win over Vandy-who lost to Georgia State-was their best win.

Pretty clear that there’s a lot of parity this year. It’s going to be interesting to see if this holds true moving forward. NIL and transfer portal appear to be spreading the talent around and blue bloods aren’t able to stockpile talent like they have been.

I dont know if it's a lack of ability to stockpile talent as much as lack of continuity of players across years. Its not like the blue bloods are playing with a bunch of 3* players now. They still get to pull in huge talent every season but are now also losing some of the younger names and replacing them with the bigger names from smaller schools.

I think they have the talent but don't have as many guys there for 3 years, they get 1 or 2 years. That leads to less cohesion across the team, maybe guys trying to play for themselves instead of team role and teams therefore not playing up to potential.

I am afraid that with the new 105 limit on scholarships that the money schools will be able to load up on talent. I believe the schools with the most talent will just be able to add to their depth leading to less parity.

We’re saying the same thing. I’m not saying they don’t still have the top talent, they just don’t have as many guys content to sit and wait for a couple of years. Those guys are transferring, getting paid and playing somewhere else now. And thus the continuity you talked about isn’t what it used to be.

I also think this September taught us how teams with transfer QB’s and key contributors can look drastically different by October.

Wonder if this is going to lead to a growing simplification of schemes in college by the big name schools. Try to win by out athleting their opponents more, where team cohesion isn't as important. And if so, can smaller schools keep enough year-year consistency with good players to keep the more challenging schemes working and make up for some of that?

How can they load up on talent when they have fewer spots available than they have had?

I still think there’s a shift in the mentality of today’s kids and the old model of get in the program and wait for your turn has changed. You may have an upperclassman transfer in now who takes your spot. Add in the fact that scouting is so advanced now, regardless of where you’re going to school, and the need to just get reps is huge.

A team with currently 2 SEC wins??? If they were forced to play an actual real opponent in non conference or a ninth conference game they probably wouldn’t be at 6 wins!!!

As long as suckers will continue to pay to watch more bad games, these guys will do it.

It’s also clear in year one that the conference championship games are going the way of conference bb tournaments.
RJ Young used to work for Hames Jail (James Hale) when he was a student at OU and also was one of the biggest HOMERS that ever lived even though he wasn’t as disgusting and nasty as a Thayer Evans! He had an alter ego called Mama on his old YouTube channel that he would yell NO MAMA, as though she was going to assault someone when OU was dissed by a media member or someone from another fan base!!! I don’t really know what he is up to these days maybe he HAD TO GROW UP WHEN HE BECAME A REAL MEMBER OF THE MEDIA! 🤔

This was on ESPN’s CFP show. In making a case for TN & SC they listed ‘key wins’ and OU was listed for both. A 5 loss team gets listed there.

The shilling for the SEC is truly nauseating this year. A guy I’ve really started to enjoy hearing from on Sirius this year is actually Jimbo Fisher. He’s been saying for weeks that this constant posturing to get certain SEC teams in is ridiculous. He’ll flat out say ‘I’m a guy that’s coached in the SEC, but you can’t just rank the teams based on how many players will get drafted.’
