OC and DC Possibilities - New DC Todd Grantham, OC Doug Meacham

Which part is in the extreme minority?

If all the people you know want Gundy gone, then I’d say you’re wrong. If all the people you know want to keep Gundy then I’d say you’re wrong. know a lot of people that are on both sides of the fence. It’s like politics, you’re probably going to hear what you surround yourself with. Its human nature to surround yourself with like minded people.

The part that says Gundy has no chance to turn it around. Not only does he have a chance, I fully expect him to exceed the expectations of naysayers like you! As I said, time will tell. We know your opinion (beaten like a dead horse endlessly) and you know mine. Let it play out.
I've always been a Gundy fan, but this year kind of soured me. Not really the 3-9 season, but his overall attitude while it was happening. With that said, I am more than pleased with the way his contact was renegotiated, and I am willing to give him an opportunity to try and turn things around. It also needs to be mentioned that Gundy's teams tend to over achieve when not much is expected, so let's hope next year is one of those times.

Just a quick chime in, I didn't want Gundy fired, but I wouldn't have shed a tear, either.

Credit to him for the last few weeks. He's done what was needed--with a long way to go.

BUT, I agree "the streak" was a little overrated. FIVE of those were six loss seasons. He deserves credit for lots of things, especially the amount of 10 win seasons he's had...but that streak stat was a little misleading.

Anyway, onward and upward.

My problem with Gundy is his DGAF attitude after big losses, and the same idiotic responses to questions, "I need to watch the film", "I thought our schemes were good/bad", "we got out-coached", etc. What is that? He was getting paid $7.5M for that? Couple that with keeping Dunn as OC for that many years when he obviously was terrible, constantly mis-managing QB's, and being lazy as heck on the recurring trail. We'll see what happens now that they've cleaned house, but I would've been fine if they'd started with him. I still think he's lazy and complacent, and just doing all this because he had to. You don't all of a sudden change how you do things when you're 58 and looking to retire in a few years.

I don't see it happening. I think we'll be better just because things had gotten so stagnant that ANY change would be an improvement, but how do you let your program get in that bad a shape when you've been coaching there for twenty years? And in the most pivotal year for the program in the new B12, you become one of the worst football teams in America? An actual embarrassment. There's absolutely no excuse for that.

Can you give it a rest? Your minority opinion is not relevant here.

Let’s get this back on track: I’m still waiting on an example or two of guys that went winless and turned things around.
@DxCowboy - Genuinely asking, who is your audience? Who are you trying to convince and why?

I guess I don’t understand what appears to be a personal vendetta against Gundy. Yes he stunk it up this year. Yes his teams have laid some eggs. From the 48-0 beat down in Manhattan to the 52-0 beat down in Boulder, the record is really bad but has been hidden with some smoke and mirrors.

I’m not arguing your points or defending others. I agree with some things all of you have said. I also have zero power to change it. (This year I quit watching us on Saturdays, had zero reason to.). Sweeping chnages have been made to set us up for the future. I’m ok with that and can move on to next year. 6-6 will keep him employed if only to reduce a separation amount further. A losing record and I think he’s in big trouble.

Do any of our programs meet your standards? Again - genuine question not trying to be a prick.
You’re reaching with the last line there. Where have I said anything like that about the other sports?

We’re not two weeks removed from what went down, and this is a discussion forum. If a guy wants to make some stupid comment acting like a bowl game is a big deal anymore, fine, but there’s nothing wrong with pointing out that somewhere around 70% of teams do that every year.

I set the bar at 7 wins next year as a good sign. How exactly is that not a fair expectation? Said I’d be happy to eat crow if he turns things around, and get stupid replies like I won’t be happy if we win the conference? GTHO with the Homer crap.

As far as personal vendettas, I think I’ve made my feelings about Gundy abundantly clear, and others have echoed a lot of what I’ve said. I’m encouraged by some of the hires and hoping they bring better results-I can do that and asl remember who got us here.

JFC how many times can you say the same thing using different words?!?

Talk about giving it a rest!

I’m not reaching at all on the last line, I’m asking a genuine question because it would help me understand where you’re coming from. What should we expect from each sport?

I don’t disagree with a lot of your points on Gundy at all. I don’t think many people who are sitting back and being rational would.

However, right now we have what we have, we can’t change it so what are axe we grinding in every post? I may be all in with you if I understood the end game.

If he doesn’t succeed right away (7-8 wins pre bowl game) I think you’re going to be vindicated and get exactly what you want. No one should argue that.

For now, we’re in a 12 month holding pattern.

If I wanted Gundy to stay, and yet everyone in my circle wanted him gone, doesn’t that fly in the face of your statement?

I’m not a nay sayer. Well depends on what you mean by that. I am pro Gundy (even if I am not happy with his performance the last few years) and in the end I think he’s earned one last shot. But to say that those that think it’s unlikely Gundy gets this turned all the way around are in the extreme minority is not accurate. Can we think of any coaches from a top 15 program that hit rock bottom like this and then rebounded to win another conference championship? I would think when a program craters like this it’s an ominous sign that the game has passed a coach by. I’m not saying it’s impossible but the odds have to be stacked against MG.

What in his opinions seem out of the mainstream? I feel like the OSU fans I know IRL largely want Gundy gone. Maybe he’s said some wild things that I missed.
Agreed. The kool-aid drinkers on this site perceive themselves in the majority, because they are in an echo chamber consisting of like 50-100 fans among our total fanbase. Just in the daily encounters I've had with other OSU fans including family, coworkers, etc....you'd be hard-pressed to find any of them as "optimistic" as these folks. At this point, most of the OSU fans I know (off of this board) want Gundy gone ASAP.

Let's step back and remember that we just went winless in a very weak conference after returning our entire team while our coach threw tantrums all season long for being criticized.

Yet we StILL have fans worshiping Gundy like he's walking on water. It's unreal. Seems like a lot of them are also crediting Gundy for making changes over the last few weeks :ROFLMAO:. These people are loyal to Gundy, not OSU, and they are holding us back from ever taking a step forward.

I think it may be more complacency and over confidence than it is the game passing him by. Hopefully the season and the aftermath are a wakeup call. If not, then there's the door coach, thanks for the memories.

No, you’ve morphed a simple straitforward discussion about one specific sport into expectations for every sport. It’s the very definition of reaching.

You agree with me quite a bit to be so vexed by‘what the endgame is.’

You want to know how the game passes you by? Complacency and overconfidence (dare I say arrogance). When you look at Gundy’s views on the portal, NIL, roster management, etcetera they were all very old man yelling at the cloud. I hate the portal, I hate NIL, I hate that you can’t make guys earn their spots anymore and I guarantee you Mike hates all of that too. But there’s no going back. You not only have to embrace it to succeed at a high level, you have to be on the cutting edge of it. So yes, the game passed him by. He’s now trying to play catch-up which, while not impossible, is a very tall task.

If you want to fix the problem that caused us to be in the last place then fix the situation with NIL money. Had Gundy been at even an average competitive level with NIL money, this last season wouldn’t have happened. You can blame Gundy if you want, but the issue is he had no money to pay players. Maybe he resisted changing coaches because any additional money spent attracting new coaches would just be even less money to attract players here.

Now we’ve taken a large chunk of his salary toward NIL, which is a good first step and we have the sold out concerts coming up. That will generate some NIL money but we need a consistent way to stay competitive, or it doesn’t matter who our coach is, if we have no money to pay players, then we will continue to suck in football.
