Head Coach Steve Lutz

The following was posted in the OSU vs Houston thread but I also wanted to post here:

“Oklahoma State has a clear identity, which I think says a lot about Steve and what he’s trying to do here. … “I see what he’s trying to do. I’ve coached against all the greats, but nobody’s team plays harder than Steve Lutz’s. … Really impressed with their team. They’re gonna beat some teams in this building.”-Kelvin Sampson

After 12 games (entire out of conference schedule and 1 Big 12 game), how would you evaluate the Lutz hire?

I have made several posts along these lines and I also want to leave those here:

"I believe what we have in Lutz is an excellent basketball coach. I don't know how this year is going to pan out but we have a deep roster and I think this team is going to be able grind out some impressive wins.

Regardless of the final result, I am confident that Lutz is going to consistently put a product on the floor that can make the fans proud. He knows basketball and teaches fundamentals. He has uncompromising standards...

I think the Lutz hire is going to go down as one of the more underrated hires in college basketball over recent years."

Not quite as optimistic on this season as I was at the point I posted that, but still just as optimistic about Lutz as a coach. One more that I posted after the Charleston Classic:

"I watched all 3 of these games and while we went 1-2, I am thrilled about the direction this team is going. Excellent effort. The kind of play that honors who have gone before and sets the standard for those who will come after."

I think he’s an excellent coach, but I don’t think he has any horses in the stall. We have no shooters on this team and you can’t make poor shooters shoot well through coaching. If you could, Eddie would’ve had Doug making free throws. You’re either a good shooter or you’re not.

This program has been completely ran into the ground. We’ve got a long way to go to even be a meddling big 12 team. This year is already a complete wash. We don’t have any talent. Hopefully Lutz has some talent coming in next season to show some progress.

Lutz is a proven commodity at two previous stops and will do an excellent job if he gets talent. Getting talent is really not totally up to him. It’s up to the boosters and the OSU NIL to pony up the dough to pay players to come play here. Unless that happens, he’s going to be banging his head against the wall, coaching teams just like this one.

Well the horses are mostly all ones he brought in, experienced, veteran, upperclassmen. Hoping they are just in a major shooting funk and can pull out of it. In the offseason/preseason, shooting was not supposed to be this teams major weakness. It was supposed to be post presence and rebounding.

I didn’t have any major expectations for this year, just was hoping to see solid coaching and development throughout the year to reinforce the Lutz hire. The roster will almost completely turnover next year so can’t really count on it to be a building year. My hope was that we were hiring a guy that was going to coach up mid level talent but so far I’ve not seen that. Plenty more season though.

SLutz was hired too late to get in on decent prospects (read: shooters). He brought in good athletes, some with skills in different areas, but not one actual complete player. For the most part they play hard, if not smart, but still an improvement (imo) over the recent past. For now I trust that the guys he has committed will have more skills to work with and less ingrained bad habits than this season's signees. As Cap said above, I expect it will take a couple more years to get competitive, but I believe we'll see improvement along the way.

I can excuse this year, but I'm not in on the "it wil take a couple of years." That's not the game anymore.

WVU started from scratch last year, too. The biggest difference being that it took a month to hire Lutz so I'm sure he missed out on some guys that he wanted--but the Mountaineers are good NOW, just 8 months after hiring a new coach and rebuilding the roster.

Yes, Lutz needs some NIL money (will the concert help that?), but I think he's a good coach and I expect this team to be much improved next year. NCAA tourney good? Maybe not...NIT/winning record? Yes.

Wonder if Cisse wasted a lot of our energy and time…? Could’ve been a big cog in the middle. To me it feels like that they cannot find their roles. Guys shoot poorly, get gun shy then look mopey all game. Seems to be a pattern. No one wants to take the reins and be the guy. If BT doesn’t turn it around next game I’d sit him rest of the year. Inexcusable

NIL all in on 2 draftable guys. Build around them the best you can with what's left.
That’s what numerous blue bloods have done and are struggling. Eddie was the king of the portal before it existed. JL3, JamesOn, Bobik, Graham twins, McFarlin, Gottlieb. Much of his success was having 22+ yr olds.

Which ones? We couldn't afford those great teams Eddie and Sean put together today.

Shooters aren’t born. Shooters are made. Lutz is a defensive oriented coach, but guys need to spend more time getting in their makes.
