Boehner gets a vote for Speaker amid House GOP chaos

Former Rep. John Boehner (R-Ohio) notched a vote for House Speaker on Wednesday as Republicans struggled to elect a new leader.

When Rep. Mike Kelly (R-Pa.) had his name called during a roll call vote for House Speaker, he shouted Boehner’s name, eliciting cheers and laughter from other members on the House floor.

Later, as the tally of votes for Speaker was announced, the House broke out into similar cheers when Boehner was mentioned as having earned one vote.

The House GOP’s leading candidate to replace Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), lost two rounds of voting this week, with no clear path for Republicans to electing a new leader as of Wednesday afternoon.

Earlier Wednesday, Boehner joined fellow Republican Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.), who was also once House Speaker, in voicing support for the idea of giving more power to Speaker Pro Tempore Patrick McHenry (R-N.C.) as Republicans work to select a new permanent Speaker.

what a s**t show...dear members of congress, you continue to embarrass this country...

Threats fly as Jim Jordan's bid to be US House Speaker turns ugly BBC

Republican lawmakers say they have been targeted by intimidation tactics, including death threats, from allies of Jim Jordan as his bid for the US House of Representatives speakership falters.
Several Republicans told reporters they had been subject to a pressure campaign by supporters of Mr Jordan, who lost a second vote for the gavel on Wednesday.
Mr Jordan, a right-wing Republican from Ohio, has condemned the threats.
A hardline conservative revolt ousted the last Speaker on 3 October.
A third vote to elect a Speaker may happen on Thursday, and Mr Jordan will need to win around more colleagues in his party to secure the 217 votes needed to win the job.
Mariannette Miller-Meeks, an Iowa Republican, wrote in a statement on Wednesday that she had "received credible death threats and a barrage of threatening calls" after voting for an alternative to Mr Jordan.

"One thing I cannot stomach, or support is a bully," she wrote.

Don Bacon, a Nebraska Republican who is a particularly vocal opponent of Mr Jordan, provided texts to Politico that appeared to show his wife being harassed by a supporter of the would-be Speaker.
"Your husband will not hold any political office ever again," one of the anonymous messages read. "What a disappoint [sic] and failure he is."
Mr Jordan denied any involvement in the pressure campaign.
"No American should accost another for their beliefs," he wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter, on Wednesday evening. "We condemn all threats against our colleagues and it is imperative that we come together."
"Stop. It's abhorrent," he added.

More than a handful of anti-Jordan Republicans, including Virginia's Jen Kiggans, Kay Granger of Texas and Florida's John Rutherford, complained of inappropriate persuasion tactics from local conservative leaders and right-wing influencers backing Mr Jordan.
"Intimidation and threats will not change my position," wrote Ms Kiggans on X.
Though none suggested Mr Jordan himself was directly involved, some placed blame for the tactics at his feet.
Carlos Gimenez, a Florida Republican, told NBC News he had brought up the matter directly with Mr Jordan, saying: "I don't really take well to threats."

"He told me that he wasn't behind it, and he's asked people to stop, but if you've asked people to stop it why aren't they listening to you?" Mr Gimenez said.
He said his office had been receiving robocalls about his opposition to Jordan.

Arkansas Republican Steve Womack criticised what he referred to as the "attack, attack, attack" tactics of Jordan allies against those lawmakers who have opposed his speakership bid.
And even some of Mr Jordan's allies, including Byron Donalds of Florida, acknowledged that the strong-arm approach may have "backfired".
"I think it was to the detriment of Jim," Mr Donalds told reporters.
The infighting comes after Mr Jordan failed for a second time to gain enough support from his party to clinch the speakership.
On Wednesday, 22 of his fellow Republicans voted against him - two more than did so in the first vote on Tuesday.

There is no end in sight to the leadership battle more than two weeks after Kevin McCarthy was removed as leader of the lower chamber of Congress in a backbench mutiny.
Without a Speaker, the Republican-controlled House is unable to pass any bills or approve White House requests for emergency aid. That includes potential help for Israel amid its war with Hamas.
Democrats, the minority party in that chamber, have been voting unanimously each time for their own leader, Hakeem Jeffries of New York.
As frustration mounts, talk has grown in the House of empowering acting Speaker Patrick McHenry for a temporary period of up to 90 days.

But he only wants to vote him in for a temporary basis.....are they legit going to try to vote in a temporary Speaker???!!!!

Jim Jordan will back empowering interim speaker Patrick McHenry

3rd in line to POTUS is NOT a temporary position !!

I would love to see Dems broker a deal with moderate Republicans to bring in a moderate Republican to serve as Speaker.

Speaker of the House Liz Cheney would be an epic troll of MAGA that might sit comfortably enough with traditional moderate Republicans to swallow.

And it might actually work out in getting some things done.

The only up-side to this whole fiasco is that maybe....probably not, but maybe....enough folks in the House will come to realize that extremism from either side of the aisle is not the way to govern. Crazy talk, I know. It's the hope that kills

I agree.

What’s so illogically insane about your idea is that 5 yrs ago Ds wouldn’t even touch Liz bc she is ideologically speaking more right than 99% of 435 house members. And now a majority (and probably close to 90%) of Rs won’t touch her bc voting yes for her angers their base and won’t allow them to raise $ or fend off primary challenges from Magastanian loonies.

What most people don’t understand is that those behind Trump/Gaetz/Greene really want to burn it all down. They are wealthy extremists or have the ability to raise $ off grifting or they are just wealthy conservatives willing to yank every safety net and traditional foundations (education/unions/SocSec/healthcare) that built and transformed our country. Think conservative media (Carlson/Bannon/Alex Jones) combined w conservative foundations (Kochs/Crow). They have hijacked American Evangelicals and have duped the average citizen and want to rebuild a society that benefits them and doesn’t lift all boats.

The scariest part is that once you succeed in burning it all down and rebuild it in your image what do people think will happen to religious liberties, freedom of the press, right to peaceful assembly or 2A? Because once the institutions are burnt and not just broken the only way to protect what has been rebuilt is to limit rights. You think Koch’s or Crows or Bannons or Gaetzs or Trumps care about your liberties or freedoms? They already disregard established laws and ethical norms. They already have their money and don’t care if you don’t have access to build your own wealth.

That’s not to say the left extreme isn’t any less dangerous. They just aren’t about to seize 3rd in line to the Pres.

Gaetz says he will do ‘everything possible’ to stop empowering McHenry

Absolute clown. It appears, as usual, the Republicans are on the cusp of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. Huge wasted opportunity.

WOW...just....WOW
CNN’s Jake Tapper on Thursday aired a chilling voicemail received by the wife of a Republican lawmaker who opposed Rep. Jim Jordan’s (R-Ohio) faltering bid for the House speaker role.

“This is pretty ugly stuff,” Tapper warned viewers before playing the audio sent to the GOP lawmaker, whom he did not identify. Anti-Jordan House Republicans have received multiple threats in recent days.

“Why is your husband such a pig? Why would he get on TV and make an a**hole of himself? Because he’s a deep-state prick? Because he doesn’t represent the people?” the male-sounding caller began.

The caller then threatened to “f**king come follow you all over the place” and warned she would “keep getting calls and emails.”

“I’m putting all your information over the internet now. Everybody else is,” they continued, adding, “You’re going to be f**king molested like you can’t ever imagine,” but “non-violently.”

They went on to add, “You must be a bitch to marry a f**king ugly motherf**ker like that.”

The voicemail was called “disgusting” by Tapper.

“The pressure campaign for Jordan was announced over the weekend. Calls like that started happening immediately. Jordan didn’t denounce it until last night. What is going on in your party?” the anchor asked Rep. Mike McCaul (R-Texas).

“Well, this shows you the level of political discourse in this country now,” McCaul responded.

Tapper interrupted to say: “No. In your party, sir. In your party.”

McCaul agreed the message was “despicable,” suggested it hadn’t been made directly on the orders of Jordan but said he feared for the safety of lawmakers back in their districts. Jordan himself has condemned the threats.

It's all Trump's fault. Had he been a big enough man to concede defeat, rather than go on to being the world's sorest loser, then the Republican Party and the country wouldn't be in this mess.
