Changes Need to be Made

We pretty much do have a GM, its Kenyatta Wright. He deals with the NIL side and works hand in hand with Todd Bradford and team on recruiting. Problem is this is all pretty new and we have not had a chance to see the results of their work yet. We should very soon though when the portal opens.
That’s good to hear. “Director of Football Business” wasn’t super clear about duties. And that’s great he deals with NIL exclusively. I’d be curious as how they are weighting their recruiting and compensation efforts by position type, which is really what a GM oversees. So if they’re both reporting to coach Gundy, I think that’s a structural flaw that keeps us in the previous days of CFB.

But overall, I was trying to say that roster management needs to supplant the HC as the main focal point behind the program’s success. A good staff there is vastly more important than coaching chops with the way college is heading.

I get what you are saying but we all know Gundy isn't going to give up complete control to a GM type. The biggest problem is we are going to have to moneyball the portal some with our NIL. Bradford has been beating the bushes trying to see who might be heading for the portal. We will be taking a lot of DL from the portal and spend a lot of our NIL there I bet. Also everyone needs to be prepared for a major overhaul of the roster. We could be seeing as much as 60% of next years roster be made up of new names. This also means though that we are going to have LOT of players leave via the portal. Many if not most of them though were told they no longer had a spot here.

Excellent points as always. I'll support anyone who stays but can't argue with the need for a talent overhaul.

I agree Gundy definitely wouldn't. But I'm also imagining a world after Gundy. Whether that is next year, or some years down the road doesn't change the fact that college is becoming more professional by the day. So needing to pivot to a more professional style management is in the cards. That is on Weiberg to figure out IMO.

Good tidbit on the roster turnover. That isn't surprising to me at all, and honestly makes me feel better as a fan. Hopefully the fanbase is self aware to understand this as well. We will be a big question mark performance wise. My only hope is that our program is open to new ideas, schemes, etc. We can talk all we want about the 0-10 season of past, but this is rock bottom with respect to Gundy's tenure, and the only way out of rock bottom is scorched earth. Ironically, it's a reason Gundy was brought in as HC. Life has come full circle it seems.

Changes don't need to be made.

I listen strictly to Robert Allen and Mike Gundy's press conferences and neither have mentioned any changes that need to be made.
Does Gundy sound like he drugged at his presser? He can't remember events, disavows any responsibility, calls fans weak when he gets challenged, refers to players by number instead of name. Just very, very odd.

Robert Allen is a stooge for Gundy. He always throws softball questions to him at the presser.

This is what CFB is today. It is to be expected. You’ll have some guys leave that you wished stayed but you’ll also be informing some to move along that can’t help the program win games. The good thing about the portal is that if we can land the right guys, next season can be the complete opposite of this one. Now, we obviously need to make other changes within the program but I expect some of those to happen. As brutal as this season was, I’m excited to see what happens here in the offseason. Thanks for the info!

I think they will be spending quite a bit on defense period!!! One way you can moneyball is via the lower divisions finding two or three Leon Johnson III types that have developed into clearly indentifiable Power 4 caliber players! That is accurate that you could see as much as 60% of next years team consist of entirely new players! Absolutely amazing if you think about it but that is what Coach Prime at Colorado has done the past two years via the portal!!!🤔

That's a big ask, my friend.
I was visiting relatives down in Dallas this weekend and my brother in law and I decided to catch the SMU - Boston College game and saw SMU win in the fourth quarter 38-28! They are now 9-1 and may make the ACC championship game! I was LAMENTING HOW MUCH I MISS LAST SEASON WHEN WE WON THOSE FOURTH QUARTER GAMES AND MADE IT TO DALLAS FOR THE BIG XII CHAMPIONSHIP GAME! 🙁

His ego has been hit hard

Another way to money ball is to to scheme your way to success with slightly lesser talent than the opponent, but that requires innovative, intelligent coordinators. We haven't done that with the exception of 3-4 years under Gundy.

That's a good point but it may become more difficult moving forward. I think we will continue to see a "dumbing down" of schemes across the country as teams will need to be able to plug and play huge numbers of transfers each season. This will only serve to help the teams who can buy the most talent.

The big exception to this is the service academies. They are in a unique situation since their guys literally can't transfer. They will really be able to close the gap by running complicated concepts. We're already seeing it this year a little bit.

Unfortunately, I think we're going to be stuck in the middle and really need to get lucky with both coordinators and talent acquisitions.

That's going to be a bummer. For a while innovation was our calling card and we were really able to mask talent gaps with it. And when we had the talent (i.e. Weeden and Blackmon), whoa Nelly!

I'm not on the fire Gundy and burn it down bandwagon because I renember what being mediocre looks like, but to go from the last couple of decades to an 8 win ceiling would be a real kick in the nuggets.

True, and requires us to work outside of our established “system”.

‘Remember what mediocre looks like’???

We’re there brother.

The question is if the guy who brought us here is the guy to lead us out of it. Fickel fired his OC after the Oregon game and the offensive futility under him because he knows it isn’t good enough. Gundy’s history is far closer to Jerry Jones, sadly. His team’s losing, but he’s telling us all not to believe our lying eyes-we’ve got this under control.

Gundy is one that does things behind the scenes especially when it involves negative things with coaches or players. Doesn't mean things are not happening just because he is not talking about them in public.
