Conference Realignment - What's next?

People do some of the darndest things at times. Why would ESPN move them to the SEC? They own both conferences. The B1G wants AAU schools and rumor has it they have a few schools sick of the expansion poop show right now.

Big 12 move for them? It would increase the conferences TV value and make them more money but they wouldn't like it.
I’m sure in the long-term what ESPN wants is all of the valuable brands under one umbrella without paying for the non-valuable ones. If they could get out of that ACC contract and move Clemson & FSU to the SEC they absolutely would. I think the question is whether FSU can find a way legally to blow up the ACC or not.

There's got to be consideration for antitrust action against ESPN/Disney if they try to monopolize the entire set of valuable teams in the NCAA. No way that should be allowed.

In the long term ESPN want to do what is going to make them the most money. I'm not sure all this realignment is helping their viewership and it's costing a lot of money.

ESPN definitely wants this. They’ve helped alot of this to happen behind the scenes. Maybe in the end it will be a miscalculation on their part but they clearly believe it’s in their best interest from a business standpoint in the long-term.

Just remember Marvel was a no miss hit-a-thon until 2022, Disney stock was as desirable as Apple until 2022, Disney parks were must go visits until 2023, it’s just a matter of time until ESPN falls into the same trap.

I think that’s already happened to ESPN. They hit rough waters well before Marvel and Disney Theme Parks did. The question is when will it happen to college football?

Which is why there’s talk of Disney spinning off ESPN.

Heard Rick Neuheisel on this topic the other day & I think he’s right: there’s a two year window now until the CFP goes up for bid again. The networks throwing billions at this are going to want to know exactly what it’s going to look like & what they’re getting in return.

Take it for what it’s worth but Swaim is back at it predicting more conference movement.

Has us going to the SEC with FSU, Clemson, K State and Tech. With A&M potentially taking their ball and going home by bolting to B1G to avoid the Longhorns.

I think it is a matter of when not if. At this point it is better for OSU to end up in the SEC than try to make the Big12 considered comparable to the BIG10 and SEC. It is all about PERCEPTION dictated by the media and nothing to do with actual results of head-to-head games.

Whatever the final results of realignment are, it needs to have 60+ teams or the football money will disappear over time. You can't alienate over half the country and think people will still buy the product.

The bigger question is when do conferences start making payouts to their members based on other variables. How long have you been a member, how well does you team perform, what is your average home attendance, did you make the play-offs, etc.

It will also almost certainly include a breakaway from the NCAA at least for football, since the NCAA basically has no power now.

Yep - fully agreed.

To your last point, the article also mentions Vandy being asked to leave by the SEC as part of all of this movement.

I’d like someone to step in and among the colleges, alums, conferences commissioners, presidents, players, etc. to agree to not allow televised games for a season.

I feel we’re letting television executives and advertisers get drunk on their power and we need to remind them that is OUR sport. Not theirs.

They are buying the privilege to broadcast our sport. But it’s still our freaking sport.

You really are a comedian, good joke.

I'd like to see how the accounting on all this nonsense works. Essentially they are talking about pulling 8 teams out of the Big 12 and doubling their money and cutting the other 8 teams payout in half. It's still costing them more and it doesn't change the playoff or the payout from it. Wouldn't it be cheaper to keep the ACC and Big 12 in tact and run the playoff with 4 conferences.

Stop quoting Swaim, he's literally just playing realignment porn, he has zero knowledge of anything except his own fantasy world.
Hmmmm, I thought Swaim was on his death bed a month ago from some tweets I saw from Larry Reece and a couple of other folks!!! I guess IT WAS A MIRACLE AS THE OLD TELEVANGELISTS USED TO SAY!!!
