Who Should OSU Hire as Next Basketball Head Coach?

How would Darien Devries work out as head coach here?
Has a good record. Has a good conference record that is consistent. That was one of the ?s I had w Porter Moser. Sure he took them deep in March but he had some stinker years in conference. Looks like he might be ok but who knows.

I will try to watch Drake play some to watch his style and how he handles in game. Probably one downside is his experience is Creighton and Drake. How does that translate to Big12? Kinda like some love McDermott and for good reason but his experience at Iowa St does raise ?s.

On a side note as I watch KSt vs Houston I will confess that I’m impressed w how hard Kelvin’s teams play. Every possession is a battle. They screen hard. They cut hard. They defend hard. They crash the offensive glass hard. I really like how they don’t concede the rebounds on their own free throws.

All that being said I can’t stand how he was at uo and never want him here not that there’s a chance. But would love to get someone who’s teams actually embody #Letswork.

He has done very well at Drake, winning over 70% of his games. If your dream candidates all say no thanks, I would think he would be high up on the next tier.

At this point, we’ve allowed our program to be run into the ground so severely by Travis Ford, and now Mike Boynton, that this is not a destination job. Really it only ever was because of Eddie Sutton. The Drake coach would probably be a good choice and probably as good a coach as we could attract here. We simply aren’t a basketball school any longer. Bringing up people like Bill Self, Kelvin, Sampson, Rick Pitino, and others of that level is laughable. No way any of those guys would even consider coming to Stillwater.

Listening to the animal yestertday Traber explained why Boyton might not be fired. Basically it is NIL. So much money is needed for NIL now that it is really hard to divert any away. It sucks, but that is what is up. Personally, I think we should consider his pay also.

Buyout as of April 1st = 6.7 million
Annual Pay = 3 million

Fire him and hire Gotlieb. Due to inexperince and the risk to the university associated with it, sign him up for $1m per year 3 year deal. A large ammount of the buyout cost is recouped through reduced coaching pay. Not to mention the difference in ticket sales could be significant.

I’ve heard the buyout money is available.

It is not a matter of available or not available. It is what they chose to spend it on. They were just saying on the radio that OSU needs about every penny it can get for NIL right now.
I have heard they are trying to find basketball only donors. Ones that aren’t going to donate to nil or softball stadium

I don’t know if something like this is feasible, but if I’m Doug and I’m in a good spot financially I go to OSU and offer to do the job on a 3 year contract at $1MM per year with me donating most of that back to OSU, with the understanding that if after the initial 3 years OSU likes what they see, they pay me commensurate with what Boynton was making. Even if Doug fails, he helps OSU iut of the financial hole. If he succeeds then everybody wins.

Don't think Doug would agree to that nor do I think are brain trust could conceive an approach that conservative.

If money is designated for a buyout then that is how the University has to spend it. And Traber doesn’t know crap.

Hiring Doug would be the dumbest thing we could do.
Completely agree. I'd rather have a random high school coach than Doug. If Doug wants to be the HC of OSU basketball, he needs to be hired as an assistant for more than couple years, then a HC at a mid-major. Then one would know wether or not he has what it takes. Do that instead of hoping you'd be handed the keys to a college basketball program without putting a single shred of effort in showing how serious he is. He's not serious about it. Otherwise, he'd already be an assistant/HC.

The OSU basketball program is a joke... hiring a person without a single second of coaching experience? We'd be the laughingstock of all laughingstocks.

We need a HC with experience, proven program builder, etc. That may prove difficult considering the dumpster fire Boynton created. The next hire is utterly critical... hiring someone without a second of coaching experience would the dumbest thing an AD could do.

If we buyout Boynton, will we also have money to pay the buyout of a current head coach at another program? Would this cause us to look more to assistant coaches across the country?

He didn't do it alone he had lots of help from the administration and their decisions prior to him even being on the scene.
