Who Should OSU Hire as Next Basketball Head Coach?

McDerrmot was my first choice until everyone said he wasn’t being considered because he wouldn’t leave Creighton.
If McDermott isn’t at the top of any P5 target list then they’re not a serious program. Maybe he wouldn’t leave, no one knows for sure but him and his inner circle. I would feel better knowing Chad at least made the call.

If we’re not going to go big, why not save the money and keep MB another year? “Who SHOULD we hire ≠ who CAN we hire. 😂

Are you forgetting that we DID hire a really good coach recently; a solid hire with experience AND upside? Those coaches exist. We hired one of them. Obviously it didn't work out for us for a variety of reasons, but it has to be acknowledged as a potential (and likely?) outcome in our current search.

Admittedly, I’m fairly unplugged from basketball for last several years as Pokes wander in the desert. But my reaction to all the names tossed out there except for McDermott is……meh. My second choice would be Bryce Drew just cuz good coaching seems to be in their DNA.

THAT said, who cares what I think. I’m pretty sure ADCW knows ball and will make a good pick.

With all due respect to everyone, I think the moons lined up and Poke U caught lightning in a bottle with Coach Eddie Sutton. I’m not sure we ever get back to a level like that. He was a HOF coach. Those guys aren’t walking around everywhere.

Also, read last night that Hunter Dickinson got like $875K NIL at Kansas (insert spit on the ground emoji here) NIL really muddies the waters now.

That said, the blue bloods of the world in both major sports are always going to be able to do that now. But a team of grown men that just want to play ball can and will beat them more often than not. Hate it for the young high school guys but I would spend the majority of my time recruiting the portal only.

The kentucky game yesterday proves that NIL is useless when it comes to tournament success. Obviously in season success is largely driven by that, but HCMB had more Mcdonalds All-Americans than any coach in OSU history and didn't win. Talent is part of the equation, but coaching is a fundamental to success.

Agree. That’s why I spit on the ground every time KU basketball is mentioned.

Just saw that the refs were also on the payroll last night for KU. I cannot believe there aren’t at least one coaches challenge or something. That was terrible.
Yep, college sports (at least the majors of football and basketball) are completely broken.

If we don't ever reach that level with NIL I really don't care. I'd rather have a team that's consistently in the tourney, makes the sweet sixteen fairly regularly, and once every 5 years or so has the stars aligned on the roster to make a deeper run. Guys that we've developed in house and who want to be here to play specifically for OSU and/or our coach, not just the biggest slimy donor check.

Let's be honest with ourselves, that's what Eddie did while he was here. In his 16 years, he made 6 sweet sixteens, 3 elite eights, and 2 final fours. The kicker is his teams were competitive in every game, and we were ecstatic about that. I'll happily take more of the same even if it means only sporadic deep postseason runs.

We're not going to generate NIL money if we don't win. It's a horse and cart situation.

We have to find a coach who can win by building a team, not just with talent, like whoever the guy is at Oakland, Michigan.

Bucky-ball was one horrible anticipation call away from beating KU.

**Remain a fan of Bucky being a strong candidate, but my bracket is busted. I was ridin’ Bucky-ball to elite 8.

I am intrigued by Preston Spradlin at Morehead State. He took over a 2-7 team at age 30 and coached them to a 12-9 record. He followed this up with 3 terrible seasons but has a record of 94-40 over the past 4 years with 2 NCAA tourney appearances and either a regular season or conference tourney championship in 3 of the last 4 years. He is only 37 years old but has over 7.5 years experience as a head coach and only makes $260k per year. Given his track record over the past 4 years, he appears to be a rising star. 14 seed Morehead State gave 3 seed Illinois all they could handle for 30 minutes yesterday before running out of gas.

He's done good work there, but it took him 5 years to get it turned around.

I feel the Big East pays their coaches generally as well as most P5 schools- also good TV deal and super competitive- obviously

Also the men’s coach is the big dog at all of those schools- which means first crack at the AD’s ear or the donors ears

Steve Alford has been offered the job. I hate to post one of those "I have an inside scoop" type of posts but a very good friend of mine, who is a booster and very well-connected with all the happenings going on, has said his booster friend says Steve has all the support from boosters and Chad is impressed by him. my friend has never been wrong about these type of things.
Regarding my post I've quoted, Steve is no longer a strong candidate - but is a backup plan. Some boosters were not impressed by Steve.

And it appears that a coach will not be hired before April 15th; when portal opens. Possible candidates leave me bewildered. I hope Chad knows what he's doing. Thing is... OSU basketball is not a desirable program. That is evident considering how many coaches have declined an interview with Chad. This is not my opinion. I am merely stating a fact that is obvious. I cannot believe how far OSU has fallen.

The next HC has one helluva difficult job ahead of him. And Chad isn't making it easier by waiting so long before hiring a new HC. I don't understand Chad's reasoning.

Can you say who declined an interview?

So all of the boosters were so impressed with Alford that he was offered the job. Until they weren't impressed with him, and the job is no longer his.

OSU basketball has definitely fallen, but I do believe it's a desirable job, and many non-homers in the media seem to think so as well. Can you provide a comprehensive list of all the coaches who have turned down an interview with Chad? Since it's "fact that's obvious".

I agree that the new HC has a tough job ahead of them. I could be wrong, but I'm fairly certain that if a coach is still coaching a team in the tournament, we kind of can't hire them this instant...right?

What I do know is that there probably isn't a single person on this board who loves OSU bball more than Chad Weiberg.
