Arkansas bill would let private school students join public school activities
Arkansas legislators filed a bill Tuesday allowing a public school district to permit a private school student to participate in interscholastic activity at the resident school district under unique circumstances.
Senate Bill 303 (SB303) is sponsored by Arkansas Sen. Tyler Dees (R-35) and Rep. Randy Torres (R-17).
Interscholastic activities between schools are subject to the rules of the Arkansas Activities Association outside the regular curriculum of a public school district. These activities include an athletic organization, a fine arts program, or a special interest club or group.
The bill states a public school district can permit a private school student to pursue participation in interscholastic activity at the public school district if the private school in which the student is enrolled does not have the specific sanctioned activity in which the student would like to participate.
If the bill passes, hundreds, if not thousands of academically gifted students in Arkansas would have more opportunities to participate in athletics and fine arts if their school does not offer them.
Many fine arts schools in Arkansas do not have athletics, and those students are forced to sacrifice high school athletics for academics if they enroll.
There has always been a "trade-off" of sorts.
If you enroll in certain fine arts schools, you sacrifice high school athletics. Students who enroll in a school with a focus on athletics, in many cases, sacrifice an opportunity to receive a top-tier education.
Students would be allowed to participate in whatever they want, wherever they want, so long as they meet the requirements.
The more opportunities offered to high school students, the higher chance they have to garner a well-rounded high school experience.
