Trump 47

I remember Blumenthal's lies well. Like my father, Blumenthal served in the military while the Vietnam War occurred, but never served overseas in Vietnam. However, multiple times while on the campaign trail for his first run as Senator he claimed he served "in Vietnam". He was caught on camera making this claim at least four different times.

That isn't an innocent mistake. There is absolutely no way my dad would ever introduce himself as serving in Vietnam. Blumenthal lied to make his resume look better and to deceive voters.

In years past, such a lie from a politician would outrage me as a veteran who did serve overseas.

Now, it seems quaint.

Q: Earlier this year, you sworn in two Republican members during the pro forma session. So why not swear in Adelita Grijalva, who was elected two weeks ago? Does it have to do with her being the 218th signature on the Epstein discharge petition?

Johnson: Look, we'll schedule it, I guess as soon as she wants.

@JTOSU
Does currently avoiding swearing in a member of congress knowing she will vote to release records that could name pedophiles not seem as worthy of comment as a lie 15 years ago?

Just curious how you decide what really bothers you enough to post as there is one party doing virtually everything right now that you mostly ignore but the minority party that has zero power still raises your ire.

Maybe be curious about yourself and understand why you feel the need to whatabout someone lying about their military service.

I googled senator lying and Hawley and Bloomenthal were cited as being dishonest today. Bloomenthal because of comments he made in the past and apologized for 15 years ago and Hawley for comments he made today.

Let's recap where we are. Currently you have mayors and governors coordinating efforts to keep the president from sending troops to attack their citizens. We are in a government shutdown where the president said today he wants to punish federal workers to get the opposition party to cave. The president also called the opposition party to insurrectionists, but he's been saying alot of things lately that make no sense-for example the other day he said he warned the Secretary of War about the danger bin Laden posed, only the Secretary would have been a 20 year old college student at the time. Heck, check out the word salad he said in a post a couple of spots above this one and ask yourself how you (or anyone) would have reacted if Biden made similar comments. Also we have a controversy in the house where the speaker is refusing to seat a new member because it means there may be a release of documents the white house wants buried. The same documents that the president while campaigning said he wanted the world to see and that the current AG (whose comments started this exchange) bragged that she had in hand before being told to not release them.

But through all of that your take on all this is some senator from Connecticut lied decades ago so that's what you focus on. I don't even know what he said-if it was really stolen valor than he deserved to be called out on it when it happened and apologize for his comments, which apparently he did years ago. If it was a partisan exaggeration (think what the right tried to say about when Walz chose to retire from the national guard) then it isn't worth mentioning decades after the fact. That one thing you found because of the person who simply asked a question the AG should have been prepared for is more important to you than all of the other stuff happening in Washington right now?

Commone man
I do know what Blumenthal did. As I said he was in the military at the same time as my dad. They are both the exact same age. They both served in the military (albeit my dad in the army and he was in the reserves) while the Vietnam War was happening. As I stated there is zero chance my dad would say he fought in Vietnam. It wasn't a slip of the tongue by Blumenthal - he actively did it several times to boost his resume and lie while running for Senator.

Your 2nd paragraph has absolutely nothing to do with this subject. C'mon man!

I think he apologized for it 15 years ago. The actual lie was before that-looks like things said from 2003-2008 (before he was a senate candidate).

From what I could find:

The story, which was published May 17, 2010, noted that during a rally in Bridgeport, Connecticut, in 2003 in support of the military, Blumenthal talked about Vietnam War veterans and stated, “When we returned, we saw nothing like this. Let us do better by this generation of men and women.” And in 2008, the paper noted, Blumenthal told a group in Norwalk, “We have learned something important since the days that I served in Vietnam.”

For what its worth, I was trying to find the NYT article that exposed his comments, but it was behind a paywall so I don't know exactly what it said.

Also, noticed how @JTOSU is dodging the questions about everything else, instead focusing on statements made and apologized for years ago. The voters of Connecticut seem to have forgiven him seeing as how hes on his 3rd term now but that's not good enough for some. I wonder how he feels about Trump's comments about what he said as well? After all that looks like a lie that is disparaging against Vietnam veterans as well. I would give him a pass on it seeing as how Trump made the comments years ago, but apparently when it comes to lying there is no status of limitations.

Actually no, the 2nd paragraph is the point. Either you are ok with things like the president sending troops into cities for political purposes or not. Either you think the Epstein files should be released or you don't. But instead of either saying yeah this administration has serious problems doing things that are unethical or defending their actions you push a narrative that has ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with current events because it allows you to defend your side without taking a position deep down you know is wrong.

Either say you are ok with this stuff or not. People would respect you more if you actually said what you believe instead of picking something fringe and using it to question the credibility of someone asking a question.

This is a great read without a paywall. It focuses on Peter Thiel, but delves a bit into J.D. Vance and a little into Trump. It helped me understand more of the reasoning behind the Christian Nationalism and constant division fueled by hatred of others. I’m a bit of a nerd about Girard, so that may be one reason I found this fascinating.

LOL, your complaint is about something that pre-dates common usage of that term.

Maybe we should call it necro-whataboutism.
Or, necro-partisanship, when the side that you are on is in complete control and doing everything so badly that you won't discuss it so the only thing you can find to whine about is decades old.

The side that I am on? What side is that?

My goodness, you can’t just admit that you poorly attempted to whatabout. You attempted to somehow tie this in with releasing the Epstein Files. Pretty sure I’ve never commented when either Administration could have or can release them. But to be clear — I absolutely think all of the files should be released. I am always for government transparency (with only exception of national security).

BTW, there is not a side about lying about stolen valor.

Everyone here but you knows exactly what side you are on based on your posts. Please, if ANYONE believes they don't know, respond and tell me.
Yep. My views have been consistent my entire life.

I’ve always been on the side of citizens for lower taxes, less government, and individual freedoms.

So yes you should be able to know that from my posts.
