Trump 47

BREAKING: President Donald Trump fired Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden on Thursday, a source familiar with the matter confirmed to The Hill.

Hayden was the first woman and the first African American to be Librarian of Congress.

President Trump has fired the Librarian of Congress, Dr. Carla Hayden.

The position of Librarian of Congress is so apolitical that only 14 people have held the role since 1802.

Hayden, who was the first woman and Black American to serve as Librarian of Congress, has held the position since 2016.

Her predecessor served in the role for 28 years before retiring.

The President just fired our extraordinary Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden. As Chair of Senate Rules I worked closely w/her. She was dedicated to the Library and highly respected by Democratic AND Republican senators. This is an outrage and a big loss.

Donald Trump Threatens to Stop Barbie Dolls Being Sold in US, threatens Mattel with 100% Tariff after CEO said the company would not move production to the US.

"I've heard [Mattel] said: 'Well we're going to go counter, we're going to try going someplace else,'" Trump said in the Oval Office on Thursday. "That's OK, let him go, and we'll put a 100 percent tariff on his toys, and he won't sell one toy in the United States, and that's their biggest market."

Why It Matters

Trump's threat comes as toys—in particular dolls—have emerged as a flashpoint in the ongoing debates over tariffs and trade policy.

Several representatives of the industry have warned that their reliance on Chinese imports will result in toys being hit hardest by the current 145-percent rate on the country, while lobbying the administration for a exemption to ensure sufficient stock and affordable prices come holiday season.

Trump and his cabinet, however, have downplayed the issue's significance, with the president himself repeatedly stating that girls will be better off for having fewer dolls, and now threatening tariffs on the world's most iconic doll manufacturer.

What To Know

Trump's comments, made following the announcement of cars- and metals-focused deal with the U.K., came in response to a reporter's question regarding Mattel's recent decision to raise its prices as a result of the tariffs.

Earlier this week, Mattel said it would be taking "pricing action" in its U.S. business, pointing to the "changes in global trade policy and U.S. tariffs" in the announcement.

During the company's first-quarter earnings call, Mattel CEO Ynon Kreiz said the tariff-driven price hike was one of the three "mitigating actions" the company had been forced to take in response to the tariffs, alongside a reduction in its dependence on China-sourced products and a broader diversification of its supply chain.

In an interview with CNBC on Tuesday, Kreiz was asked whether it would be cheaper to relocate some manufacturing to the U.S. due to the tariffs, but responded: "We don't see that happening."

"We believe that production in other countries—where we can be efficient and more productive—is the best balance between manufacturing outside of the U.S. and [continuing] to develop product in terms of design and creativity in America," he said.

In response to the price increases, and similar announcements made by car manufacturer Ford this week, Trump said: "I think they're saying that just to negotiate deals with me."

Trump's remark on Mattel "trying to go somewhere else," and the resulting threat of a targeted, 100 percent tariff on its toys was somewhat ambiguous, given the company has only advocated shifting more of its manufacturing outside of China.

What People Are Saying

President Donald Trump, during an interview with Meet the Press on Sunday, said: "I don't think that a beautiful baby girl needs—that's 11 years old—needs to have 30 dolls. I think they can have three dolls or four dolls because what we were doing with China was just unbelievable. We had a trade deficit of hundreds of billions of dollars with China."

Mattel CEO Ynon Kreiz, speaking with CNBC this week, said: "80 percent of toy production globally happens in China. The Toy Association has stated that many companies are exposed to potential risks. If the current situation continues, there will be significant disruption in the industry. We support the Toy Association's advocacy for zero tariffs on toys to ensure that safe and affordable products remain accessible to everyone."

'No more woke handouts': Trump vows to kill Biden era "Racist Law" that spent $2.5 billion to provide high speed internet access to seniors, incarcerated individuals, veterans, people with disabilities, those facing a language barrier, members of racial or ethnic minority groups, and people in rural areas.

President Donald Trump announced this week that he would end the Digital Equity Act, which provided $2.5 billion in grants to ensure everyone had equal access to the digital economy.

"I have spoken with my wonderful Secretary of Commerce, Howard Lutnick, and we agree that the Biden/Harris so-called 'Digital Equity Act' is totally UNCONSTITUTIONAL," Trump wrote Thursday on Truth Social. "No more woke handouts based on race!"

"The Digital Equity Program is a RACIST and ILLEGAL $2.5 BILLION DOLLAR giveaway. I am ending this IMMEDIATELY, and saving Taxpayers BILLIONS OF DOLLARS!"
he added.

The act, signed into law by former President Joe Biden, targets seniors, incarcerated individuals, veterans, people with disabilities, those facing a language barrier, members of racial or ethnic minority groups, and people in rural areas.

"Too many communities lack access to high-speed internet. Many more can't afford it or don't know how to use it," the government's broadband website explained before being scrubbed by the Trump administration. "The divide between those who have internet access and those who don't is stark. To create an equitable economy, we all need access to reliable and affordable high-speed internet."

Trump lowers tariffs and boosts 'super luxury' Rolls-Royce, Bentley and Jaguar in US trade deal with UK

WASHINGTON ― President Donald Trump said he made a special exception for the United Kingdom by lowering tariffs on automobiles to help high-end British auto manufacturers such as Rolls-Royce, Bentley and Jaguar that produce vehicles in the United Kingdom.

“It's a very special car, and it's very limited number, too,” Trump, speaking from the Oval Office, said of Rolls-Royce vehicles, which sell for between $350,000 and $520,000 for new models. “It’s not one of the monster car companies that makes millions of cars. They make a very small number of cars that are super luxury."

In his much-touted trade agreement with the U.K. announced May 8, Trump kept a 10% baseline tariff on British products imported to the United States. But he lowered 25% universal tariffs on automobiles from the U.K. to 10%, while the 25% rate still applies to vehicles from other countries. Trump also agreed to eliminate 25% tariffs on steel from the U.K.

“That’s really handmade stuff. They've been doing it for a long time in the same location,” he said. “So I said, ‘Yeah, that would be good. Let’s help them out with that one.’”

Trump added: "But that's different than a car company that comes out and makes millions of cars."

DHS Secretary Flouts SCOTUS Order to Senate, Says ‘No Scenario’ Where Abrego Garcia Comes Back despite 9-0 SCOTUS ruling that the US Must facilitate his return.

WASHINGTON — Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem on Thursday openly flouted a Supreme Court order to facilitate the return of Kilmar Abrego Garcia to the U.S., insisting during a Senate committee hearing that there is “no scenario” in which the Maryland man will be in the country again.

In response, Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) called her remarks “incredibly chilling for the balance of powers in a democracy.”

Noem was testifying before a Senate appropriations subcommittee when she made her comments about Abrego Garcia, who federal law enforcement officials last month arrested in his home state of Maryland and deported to an El Salvador prison.

The Trump administration has accused Abrego Garcia, who has no criminal record, of being a member of the international gang MS-13, which his family and attorneys have denied. Originally from El Salvador, he was granted a “withholding of removal” order in 2019, which prevents the U.S. government from sending him back to his country of origin due to a credible fear of persecution. He’d been legally living in Maryland until ICE agents detained and deported him in March, which the administration said was due to an “administrative error.”

In a 9-0 decision, the Supreme Court last month ordered the Trump administration to immediately “facilitate” Abrego Garcia’s return and proceed with its case against him in the U.S., as he was never given due process, which is required by the Constitution. But the administration has been violating the court’s order — which on Thursday Noem bizarrely said wasn’t true, while also insisting Abrego Garcia is never coming back to the U.S.

“Abrego Garcia is a citizen of El Salvador and should never have been in this country and will not be coming back to this country,” she told senators. “There is no scenario where Abrego Garcia will be in the United States again. If he were to come back, we would immediately deport him again.”

Noem said he doesn’t belong in the U.S. “because he is a terrorist, he’s a human smuggler and he is a wife-beater.” There is no evidence that Abrego Garcia is a terrorist, and he was never arrested on or charged with human smuggling. It is true, though, that his wife filed a protective order petition against him in 2021, alleging he had physically attacked her on multiple occasions.

That is all beside the point, of course, and Noem knows it: Abrego Garcia is entitled to due process in the U.S., and the Supreme Court ordered the Trump administration to bring him back for it. The prospect of the executive branch intentionally violating an order from the nation’s highest court doesn’t just amount to a constitutional crisis; it is grounds for holding the Trump administration in contempt of court.

During the hearing, Democrats pounced on Noem for dodging questions about the legality of the administration’s actions.

“Does the Supreme Court decision not require you to facilitate the return of Mr. Abrego Garcia?” Murphy asked.

“The Trump administration is complying with all court orders and judges’ orders,” she replied.

“Does the Supreme Court order require you to facilitate the return of Mr. Abrego Garcia?” Murphy repeated. “Yes or no?”

“It is up to the president of the El Salvador to make the decision…,” Noem began.

“You’re a defendant in the case!” said the Connecticut senator, stunned.

As Noem again brought up that Abrego Garcia is not a U.S. citizen and is a “dangerous individual,” Murphy cut in.

“The discussion ends when the Supreme Court rules 9-0 that you have to facilitate his release,” he said. “The fact you can’t even acknowledge the wording of the order which commands you to facilitate his release, and you advertise to this committee you are going to willfully ignore the ruling ― that is incredibly chilling for the balance of powers in a democracy that relies on the executive branch to honor decisions made by the highest court of the land.”
Incredibly chilling for the balance of powers in a democracy.Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.)
Things got a bit testy when Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.), who went to El Salvador last month and met with Abrego Garcia, asked Noem if the Department of Homeland Security is doing literally anything to comply with the Supreme Court’s order.

“We are following court orders,” she said, giving no details. “Your advocacy for a known terrorist is alarming to me.”

Van Hollen chided Noem for using “political rhetoric” and reiterated that there is no evidence Abrego Garcia has ties to terrorists.

“I’m not vouching for the man, I’m vouching for his due process,” he said.

“Well, yes, you are, sir,” Noem said. “You’ve been vouching for him. I would suggest that you defend and stand alongside the victims … and the citizens who live here and are United States Americans.”

“I know you’re doing a political speech here,” Van Hollen said, as they talked over each other. “I’m asking questions of law.”

“I truly believe this as an American,” she replied.

Sen. Katie Britt (R-Ala.), who chairs the subcommittee, eventually jumped in as Van Hollen’s time ran out. She abruptly cut him off as he was talking.

“Madam chair,” he said to Britt. “I have some additional questions.”

“No sir, that’s up to you to manage that time,” she said and ignored his request, turning to Sen. John Kennedy (R-La.) to begin his questions. Van Hollen was miffed.

“Well, I need a little help from a chair that respects the members of the committee,” he sniped as Kennedy began his turn.

Their point is if you pardon people for Jan 6 activities how do you prosecute peaceful protesters, and how does that play with judges and juries going forward.

Son of Heroic Vietnam War Vet Detained by ICE

The son of a Vietnam War veteran has been detained by federal immigration authorities, leaving his family devastated.

Blong's journey to the United States is rooted in his family's history of service. He came to the U.S. as a refugee at age 2, following the Vietnam War. His father, who fought alongside U.S. forces, had been recruited and trained by the CIA, according to the GoFundMe post.

After the U.S. withdrew from Southeast Asia, Blong's family was granted refuge in America.

Blong Yang, a longtime resident of the United States and the son of a war hero who fought alongside U.S. forces during the "Secret War" in Laos, was apprehended by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on April 30 while on his way to work in Lakeland, Minnesota.

"This situation has been extremely heartbreaking and difficult," his daughter, Kylee Yang, told Newsweek in a statement. "We made the decision to post our GoFundMe because we needed immediate financial support and relief. However, this abrupt family separation has been traumatizing."

What To Know

Since Blong's detainment, the Yang family has been left reeling, grappling with emotional distress.

Kylee described the anguish of being separated from her father in a GoFundMe post, as well as the constant concern for his safety while he remains locked up in ICE detention.

The ripple effects of her father's arrest have caused significant financial strain, as the family has lost a key source of income.

Kylee's mother, Anna, has been forced to miss work because of the overwhelming stress of managing the household and navigating the complex legal system.

Blong, who has been married to Anna for nearly 25 years, is the cornerstone of the family. He is a father to Kylee (23), her sister (21) and two younger brothers (15 and 11). His absence is felt deeply, particularly by his younger sons.

"If my dad is deported, it would tear him away from everything he's ever known and loved. His absence has been especially painful for my younger brothers," Kylee wrote on GoFundMe.

After the U.S. withdrew from Southeast Asia, Blong's family was granted refuge in America.

Kylee paints a picture of her father as a warm, caring individual who is a beloved member of his community. He is known for his sense of humor and his love for sports, particularly the NFL's Minnesota Vikings.

Blong has also been an active member of his union, Teamsters Local 120, where he served as a union steward and was dedicated to protecting the rights of his colleagues.

The circumstances surrounding Blong's detainment are tied to past mistakes he made when he was younger, according to his daughter. His daughter insists that the man he is today should not be defined by his past, but by the positive contributions he has made to his family and his community.

The family is working with MN8, a local non-profit that supports Southeast Asians facing detention and deportation.

Immigration courts are overwhelmed, with a backlog exceeding 3.7 million cases, according to Syracuse University's Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse. Asylum-seekers often wait years for a decision. There's broad political support for adding judges and staff to ease the burden.

What People Are Saying

Anna Yang, in a statement: "We know many of you feel compelled to defend our dad or share your own feelings about the injustice of his detainment, and we really appreciate that. But right now, our family is focused on reuniting with our dad, and creating space to process, grieve, and heal.

"We are asking that when you share the link especially on social media you do it without engaging in comments. We're asking this out of care and caution, as any public dialogue could unintentionally lead to harmful backlash from federal government or put our family at more risk. This was a recommendation from MN8 and our attorney."

Kylie Yang, in a GoFundMe post: "My dad has such a likable character. He's funny, a peacemaker, and gets along with literally everyone.

"He has always been a hardworking, reliable man who is respected at work."

What Happens Next

As Blong's family battles against legal obstacles, they are also struggling to cover mounting fees, which are expected to exceed $10,000. The Yangs are appealing for support from their community to help navigate the challenges of immigration proceedings.

GOP lawmaker calls police on man over anti-Trump hat

One Republican state legislator in Wisconsin recently interrupted a committee hearing in order to remove a man from the room over an article of clothing.

The National News Desk (TNND) reported Thursday that Wisconsin State Assembly member Ron Tusler (R) called a hearing of the Assembly Judiciary Committee into recess after one witness who was in line to testify on legislation was seen wearing a hat that read "F--- Trump Viva Mexico." Democratic Assembly member Ryan Clancy confirmed in a social media post that Tusler asked Wisconsin Capitol Police to remove the man from the hearing.

“In response to wearing a hat that he found ‘offensive,’ Rep. Ron Tusler just called the police to have someone removed rather than hearing his testimony,” Clancy wrote. “Rep Tusler called a recess and left, and so did the Capitol Police when they showed up. The next item, appropriately, also deals with the trampling of first amendment rights.”

Even police officers were hesitant to act on Tusler's request given that the man Tusler wanted escorted out was sitting quietly at the witness table, with one reportedly saying: "Can anyone tell me why we were called?"

Assemblywoman Sylvia Ortiz-Velez, who is the ranking member of the committee, accused Tusler of creating even more of a disturbance than the man who was wearing the controversial hat.

"The only disruption I have seen is you coming here when we could have continued with the testimony of this gentleman, it would have been less disruptive," Ortiz-Velez said.

Ortiz-Velez later told TNND that she "also believe that the hat is protected by the First Amendment of our Constitution." And Article 1, Section 3 of the Wisconsin state constitution reads: "The right of the people peaceably to assemble, to consult for the common good, and to petition the govern

Top Trump confidante Roger Stone calls for Dem lawmaker to be tried and executed for treason after Dem Senator introduces the End Crypto Corruption Act.

Act would make it illegal for POTUS, VPOTUS, Top Admin Officials and their families from issuing, endorsing or sponsoring any Crypto assets.

Roger Stone calls for US Senator (D) Mark Kelly to be Charged with Treason , tried and if found guilty to be Executed after Kelly introduces End Crypto Corruption Act

In an email sent Friday, Sen. Mark Kelly (D-AZ) said that he called out Trump's crypto coins and his effort to make "millions of dollars" from the effort. Kelly noted that he co-sponsored legislation that would make it illegal for top officials to engage in what he called crypto "corruption."

Reposting Kelly's comments, Stone said, "Senator Mark Kelly is cashing in on his US Senate seat as a partner in a Chinese communist company that makes surveillance balloons. He should be charged with treason and if convicted executed, consistent with federal law."

Kelly responded saying

"When I joined the Navy, I swore an oath to support and defend the Constitution. I did it again when I was sworn in as Arizona’s United States Senator," Kelly said. "I will continue to uphold that oath, and because it matters to our democracy, I will do everything I can to stop the blatant corruption in Washington."

He alleged that people like Trump and Stone are "only looking out for themselves." In describing what happened, Kelly said, "You heard me right."
"And it’s clear they’re scared of the attention we’re bringing to them and their corrupt deeds," he also added.
