All of that is true and this isn't a statement of support of current policy but you guys are ignoring the real source of our economic power.....the world trades in dollars. We are the biggest consumer and will be for some time as our poor folks consume like the top half of the population you posted above.....but the dollar is the undisputed king of currency.

I agree. Im not economist, but I always understood that the reason the US Dollar was the global currency was because we were the largest economy so it made sense and our currency was very stable.

It's why BRICS can be such a big deal. You establish a common currency between those nations and that's when are stranglehold vanishes. That isn't a thing yet but that's the threat of BRICS more than anything.....particularly with crypto currencies being easy to create and more accepted.

Plus we are losing soft power that might entice countries to stick with us. The more that goes on the worse this looks for us.

WWII did it more than anything......the "free" world borrowed dollars.....then crude was settled in dollars.....all combined with as you said above we became the biggest consumer/strongest economy.

I don't now that it will be the Yuan....the Yuan is certainly in the drivers seat.....I think if if happens it will be some form of joint commodity based Euro type currency. That would be checkmate.....but a lot, a whole lot has to happen before that does.

As much as it’s a good thing to be the world’s reserve currency, it’s also actually a huge burden and very expensive. I really don’t think anyone wants their currency to be that.

Trump has always said he wants a weaker dollar while maintaining it as the world reserve currency of choice. Those two things don't really go real well together.

And his policies are having a negative effect on the U.S. dollar remaining the reserve currency of the world.

It was the Bretton Woods Agreement that did it officially.

Then the US abandoned the gold standard for its issuance of currency.

Obviously, to get back at Iran for being against Isreal. And so Trump can show Iran how he can impose his power on the world. It isn't an appropriate thing to do to promote peace with Iran. But my guess is Saudi Arabia goes along with it.

A weakening dollar makes imports more expensive, so that is why Trump wants it as another reason to encourage more manufacturing. Due to the initial bad effects, it is a cruel experiment to play upon the American economy. The positive results won't be strongly apparent for a long while, if at all. As I have written before a safer experiment would be to abolish all tariffs as well as the corporate income tax.
