China Moves to Seize on US Upheaval With Appeal to Strengthen UN

(Bloomberg) -- China’s top diplomat said no country can “go it alone” and called for a stronger UN, as Beijing seeks to exert more global influence in the face of President Donald Trump’s move to roll out broad-based tariffs and sever some US ties to the world body.

“Countries are interdependent and share the same future, and no country can go it alone,” Foreign Minister Wang Yi told reporters after a United Nations Security Council meeting that China convened to discuss the importance of multilateralism. “We must not allow the strong to bully the weak, still less to revert to the law of the jungle.”

China has sought to seize on Trump’s threats to impose tariffs globally and challenge historic allies. Wang, 71, has emerged as the face of that effort, embarking on a charm offensive in Europe last week in a bid to position China as a counterweight to Trump’s administration.

Trump has also pushed to distance the US from the UN by backing out of the World Health Organization and withdrawing from institutions including the Human Rights Council and the UN relief agency for Palestinians.

The United States is currently conducting a review of our support to the UN,” Acting US Ambassador to the UN Dorothea Shea said at the Security Council meeting. “We will consider whether the actions of the organization are serving American interests, and whether it can be reformed.”

With Europe reeling from Trump’s intervention to push an end to Russia’s war in Ukraine, the Chinese diplomat first visited the UK and Ireland. Speaking later at the Munich Security Conference, Wang told the audience that China will be a “factor of certainty” in a multipolar world that is “becoming a reality.”

At the same event, US Vice President JD Vance assailed European leaders for regulating online speech and accused them of ignoring voters in their countries worried about the impact of mass migration.

Wang is also heading to South Africa for a foreign ministers’ meeting of the Group of 20 nations later this week. It’s a gathering that US Secretary of State Marco Rubio will skip after attacking the country’s land and equality policies and what he said was the group’s focus on diversity and climate change.

Speaking outside the Security Council, Wang sought to convey an attitude of stability and predictability. He didn’t mention the US by name.

“No matter how the international landscape changes, China will stay committed to multilateralism,” he said. “We stand ready to work with all countries to build a better future.”

The US president announced 10% tariffs on China days into his second term. Beijing retaliated by targeting a handful of American companies, slapping levies on some US goods and placing export controls on some critical metals.

A billionaire with a tiny touch of common sense wants a very strong and large middle and upper middle class. That is where they make their money.
I have to wonder / assume that at some point billionaires no longer care just about the money (like the average person). Why would they? Musk has more money than a lot of actual countries (like Iceland and Portugal). When you can have absolutely anything you want, what's left? Working, earning, and buying things has to lose it's luster when it no longer matters.

Power, control, and influence. The world and it's people are their playthings.

I for one am not surprised by any bit of this. China wants to replace the US as the world's dominant power. Us backing away and picking fights with everyone is just playing into their hands.

Trump admin cuts to CDC could affect 9/11 responders

President Donald Trump's administration is continuing its radical effort to cut much of the federal government -- and is being met with dozens of legal challenges.

The Department of Government Efficiency is taking aim at agencies such as the Internal Revenue Service and Social Security Administration, as the administration argues in court that Elon Musk is not the administrator of the newly-formed entity despite public comments from Trump to the contrary.

Trump, meanwhile, attacked Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy while speaking at his Mar-a-Lago home as U.S. officials hold talks with Russia about ending the war in Ukraine that started when Russian President Vladimir Putin invaded its neighbor. Zelenskyy was not invited to the talks with Russia.

Latest Developments

The Trump administration’s cuts to the federal workforce could affect the World Trade Center Health Program, potentially putting the health of 9/11 first responders at risk, critics said.

Sixteen probationary staff members at the World Trade Center Health Program have been fired as part of the layoffs at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Several other full-time staff members have agreed to take a buyout, according to Citizens for the Extension of the James Zadroga Act

It amounts to a 20% reduction in the staff that supervises and administers the World Trade Center Health Program. There are also cuts to research grants that fund efforts at the FDNY to prove new conditions are related to service at the World Trade Center site on and after 9/11.

I could care less about Ukraine or Zelensky. Just another coup d'é·tat put on by our government that has blown up in our face. Seriously show me one time doing this crap has worked out in our favor in the last 30 years. I agree with the admin on USAID they need to be burned to the ground and rebuilt with an improved mission that actually benefits us.

Power, control, and influence. The world and it's people are their playthings.
Additionally, they can use that power, control, and influence to pad their pocketbook much easier and at a greater level than by selling Teslas to individual middle class consumers.

Elon's #1 customers are governments, particularly the US Government. The potential for self-dealing at this point is massive.

When you simplify the Ukrainian revolution down to "it was the CIA" not only is that very, very ignorant, but it completely takes away the agency of millions of Ukrainians who supported EU membership and moving away from Russian influence. Talk to a Ukrainian immigrant. I had a customer who was one and it pissed him off that people thought it was a coup.

Like they're over there fighting and dying for independence and we're just fat f*cks over here like "NO OBAMA DID THAT SO GO RUSSIA"

The Trump administration has enacted a pause on all immigration applications filed by migrants from Latin America and Ukraine allowed into the U.S. under certain Biden-era programs, citing fraud and security concerns, according to two U.S. officials and an internal memo obtained by CBS News. https://cbsn.ws/418DCZZ

Rubio will skip a G20 meeting after calling host South Africa's policies anti-American

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio will skip a two-day meeting of foreign ministers from the leading rich and developing nations that starts on Thursday after criticizing host South Africa's policies as anti-American.

Instead, Rubio was headed back to the United States on Wednesday from his first trip to the Middle East as America’s chief diplomat after leading a U.S. delegation in talks with Russia in Riyad over the war in Ukraine.

Rubio spoke with the foreign ministers of France, Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom and the European Union's foreign policy chief to brief them immediately after Tuesday's meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, the State Department said.

Top European diplomats, as well as Lavrov and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi are all expected at the Group of 20 meeting in Johannesburg while the U.S. will be represented by a lower-level delegation.

A G20 meeting would normally be an opportunity for a U.S. secretary of state to push for support on U.S. positions, especially at the start of a new administration.

Analysts say Rubio's absence reflects the Trump administration's indifference to organizations promoting international cooperation, but Rubio has also directly rejected South Africa's priorities for its G20 presidency. The hosts have picked “solidarity, equality, sustainability” as the theme of the G20 this year.

South Africa, the first African nation to hold the group's presidency, says it will try to advance the interests of poor countries, especially with debt refinancing and helping them mitigate the impacts of climate change, where the developing world is asking rich countries to pay more.

Rubio posted on X this month that he would also not attend the main G20 summit in Johannesburg in November, saying South Africa was using the gathering to promote diversity, equality and inclusion frameworks, "In other words: DEI and climate change."

“My job is to advance America’s national interests, not waste taxpayer money or coddle anti-Americanism,” Rubio wrote.

Rubio's decision to skip the G20 meeting also underscores a major deterioration in U.S. relations with South Africa, one of its key trade partners in Africa.

President Trump signed an executive order this month stopping U.S. aid and assistance to South Africa over a land law that he says discriminates against some of the country's white minority. The order also called South Africa's foreign policy anti-American and criticized its ongoing case accusing Israel of genocide in Gaza at the United Nations' top court, and what it said was the country's closeness to the Communist Party in China.
