Trump 47

What's in there has been discussed quite a bit. If aid for hurricane victims and a continuation of the farm bill is your definition of pork, Im not sure what to think.

Also if you don't like this, get ready to be really upset in about a month. Any idea of streamlining government spending with the new administration is a fantasy-just going to be putting more money in different pockets and calling it efficiency.
So don’t get mad about incredible government spending now…..because there may be, might be, potentially could be a chance of more ridiculous spending in the future???

Maybe, just maybe…condemn frivolous government spending now AND in the future when it occurs.

Everything is frivolous when it doesn't benefit you. Congressman will talk about cutting spending but talk about how many tax dollars they brought back into their local economy. I dont see how people whose main goal is get elected will stop doing things that get them elected.

But yeah, if you want to get mad about it, get mad. Just don't say this is bad because x while letting the person who wants to raise the debt celing now (and remove it entirely later) slide because of the letter next to his name.

From the article...

Some Democrats have voiced support for getting rid of it in recent years.

Rep. Brendan Boyle, D-Pa., the ranking member of the Budget Committee, has been leading the charge with legislation called the Debt Ceiling Reform Act that would diminish Congress’ ability to use the threat of default as a tactic in legislative negotiations. He introduced it in 2023 with Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., who unveiled a companion bill in the Senate.

The House bill has 55 co-sponsors, all Democrats, including former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

Boyle told NBC News that “the only way” House Democrats should “vote to raise the debt ceiling under Trump is if we have a permanent elimination” of it — or a reform to largely nullify it, like his bill, which would give the president the power to lift the debt ceiling unless Congress overrides him.

He kept the door open to considering it as part of a government funding bill. “As for including this in the CR, I’d have to consider all of the other issues involved,” Boyle said.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., also posted on social media Thursday morning that she agreed with Trump's call to abolish the debt ceiling.

"I agree with President-elect Trump that Congress should terminate the debt limit and never again govern by hostage taking," she wrote.

Yeah. I don't disagree with him here and wouldn't be opposed to it. The annual budget should auto authorize funding each year. The extra limit on the deficit doesn't make sense to me.

I agree. It seems arbitrary and I'm not against the idea. It's just that people claim he wants to cut the deficit when anything seen so far doesn't support that. They either need to admit they are OK with more spending as long as it benefits them or say they can't support how he wants to run the government.

So now you're FOR eliminating the debt ceiling?

To be honest i haven't given it much thought, but I will say Trump's thoughts on it are understandable. What's the point of creating an emergency when we all know how it's going to turn out? I'm not jumping on the spend whatever bandwagon but I'm not opposed to the concept.

I don't see the reason for rushing it through now when it isn't necessary though.

Considering he just created an emergency i dint see it's a means to prevent future emergency... other than preventing it during HIS term.

Let's be clear, the reason Trump wants to do it now....and is convincing his Congressional sycophants to hold the government hostage over getting it now....is so he can later say "I didn't do that. It didn't happen on my watch. That's all Biden." if eliminating the debt ceiling doesn't work out well while concurrently claiming "It was all me. I made them do that." when and if it does work out well.

And Magastanis will willingly swallow whatever spin he puts on it....even if that spin switches weekly.

I thought it was just right wing fear mongering, but apparently immigrant might actually be a problem.
Yes. He is going to be a problem. Anyone with that much money and willingness to act politically is going to be a problem unless they really care about everyone - but if they did, they wouldn't have $400billion.
