Talk me thru managing current players

Can somebody explain to me how a new coach manages the players currently on the team and trying to move forward with better players?

I'm assuming OSU is obligated to scholarships for any player currently on the roster. And since there is a scholarship limitation, how does a coach get rid of the players he doesn’t want to make room for players he does? So if you roll in like Deion and tell ‘em “I’m bringing my own luggage, you guys hit the portal” doesn’t mean they have to.

Scholarships are on a year to year basis. No guarantees. The new coach can recommend to individuals to go somewhere where they can play more. Some coaches will even try to help them find a new home.

I thought that the big 12 moved to 4 year schlaship agreements a few years back.

It’s pretty common to have the old conversations that we don’t see a place for you here moving forward.

That was my understanding as well. So to quote Richard Gere in “Officer and a Gentleman” I gotta think a lot of OSU players are gonna say “ I got nowhere else to go”

Even so, the coach has no obligation to give the players playing time. That's a killer for some players who want to compete.
Schools are only allowed a certain number of scholarship players, right? A coach has to get more and better players before he can “not play” the less skilled players. Seems like catch-22.
