$24 Million in Paychecks to Failed School Exec. 9% Math Proficiency. And now…an Oklahoma Partnership?
Yesterday, Supt. Walters and the OKSDE announced a new partnership with American Virtual Academy (AVA) to provide online learning options for Oklahoma families (see attached media release).
According to Walters, AVA promotes American principles, but he leaves important details out.
AVA is directly tied to Primavera Online School in Arizona, a failing charter school that was just ordered to shut down after three straight years of “D” grades and some of the worst test scores in the state. Just 9% of students were proficient in math last year.
Meanwhile, Primavera’s founder, Damian Creamer, quietly paid himself $24 million in public funds since 2016, while academic outcomes have tanked. And yet, Ryan Walters now wants to bring this same operation to Oklahoma.
I fully support teaching American founding principles, but we also must have accountability.
Propping up poor performance and hiding behind political talking points does nothing for kids or parent choice. Let’s give kids and families good choices, and let’s make sure public education is strong enough to be their best option.
Oklahoma’s children deserve better. Our public dollars deserve transparency.
As your next State Superintendent, I’ll deliver both with integrity, accountability, and a relentless focus on student success.
