NCAA Tourey Thread

Yeah. The only talent like that we have gotten in 20 years made the team worse because he’s a lunatic that will try to fight the wrong guy and end up passing away from his injuries or straight up get his head blown off.

Well, we won our third straight national championship 18 years ago so it hasn’t quite been 20 years.

Could you explain what you mean? I hear that a lot in wrestling, but I don't quite understand it. Seems to me, either you win or you don't. Just curious!
It’s easier to cover your warts in a dual than a tournament. You can game plan matchups, cover up some weaker wrestlers because the guys around them are able to compensate, and get bonus points if you are strong where the other team is weak. Every team has one or two “dudes” and it’s really hard to cover up your warts. Cornell could have one really good dude and you squash them in a dual but not even wrestle a Cornell guy through an entire tournament except that guy that squashes you

It’s way more than that. Penn State is pinning their way through the entire tournament and the ones we do manage to win, we’re getting regular decisions or maybe a major here and there. The good teams pile up huge bonus points and we’re not good at that.

All that makes my point…folks let it fly in tournament play whether it’s Penn state or not. Kids wrestle differently when an individual trophy is on the line.

I think it just gives some perspective about how dominant the Cowboys have been historically. OSU wrote the book on folkstyle wrestling. Penn State is re-writing it. There is a new style and more and more programs are adapting to the aggressive nature and "funky" movement that creates opportunities that shouldn't be there. Watching yesterday...and in recent years...the big10 has been forced to recruit and push athletes to attack in the same manner that PSU has pushed the sport. I believe the addition of Coleman will bring in the talent needed to build this in the OSU room. We are seeing the progress in these new younger guys, but the room doesn't challenge them in the way a room at PSU does. Look at Spratley...he came from Minn and is aggressive and has that funk in his attack. PSU will remain the top program because they were the first and are essentially the Alabama of wrestling...recruit everyone great...siphon the cream and the rest either to stay to "get a ring" or transfer and become the starter at another school. The sport is growing and as more and more of these kids develop in this style and HCJS has adapted his staff...we will still be a presence but I see more parity in the programs other than PSU.

[just my very minor opinion as a fan]

Also, while I am posting...

the kids from ISU that bleached their hair for the post-season just make me like them even less...no reason other than they also wrestle so aggressively and beyond the whistle that it causes injuries and the bleached hair makes think "punk".
