I would be curious how much China via Russia is influencing this. There was no question we are coming out of this in a weakened position (how much so seems to be the question).

Putin can play nice and negotiate security agreements w Eastern Europe while China negotiates trade including agriculture agreements w Europe and energy trade agreements w Iran and Russia including $2MM and up tolls w Iran.

We will be weakened economically w trade partners cut off and potentially militarily if Gulf allies restrict access to bases.

We may not agree w any of our Middle East excursions to date but it did allow us to check Iran w proximity. Now that Iran continues to call our bluff our Gulf Allies could switch to China who would have a more favorable relationship via Russia w Iran.

This is probably all worst case scenario but does anyone think 47 doesn’t hold a masters degree in effing up a train wreck?

In an analogy of a boxing match to this war:

Trump is a heavyweight with heavy hands, but little skill or stamina.

Iran is the middleweight journeyman counterpunching veteran fighter with an unimpressive record but is cagey, scrappy, and not above low blows and head butts to stay in the fight.

All the middleweight has to do is survive the early rounds and drag that lumbering heavyweight into deep waters and let them punch themselves out until they don’t have the will to continue.

It’s not looking good for the heavyweight at this point.

He's willing to throw in the towel in the first few weeks of a war that is not going how he hoped. Does he realize that these things tend to take time? 2. Even if we did put all of their ships that deploy mines at the bottom of the sea it's going to take a while for the strait to be clear. Don't take my word for it, ask the people that have monied interest in the boats that cross the strait if business will return to normal first thing Monday morning.

3. Iran knows what they can do from now until the strait is no longer strategically important if they need something. There is absolutely nothing you can do about this and when the world has to deal with it again that will be your legacy. Yep. Most people understand sound bites over nuanced negotiations and pallets of cash has a better sound bite than unfroze long held assets as part of a negotiation over a nuclear treaty.

Whether that should have happened is up for debate but it would have happened eventually most likely. Everything that has happened there for the past month or so was completely avoidable. And if it wasn't avoidable it likely would have happened years if not decades ago. Every president since Eisenhower understood the importance of keeping Iran in check but also trying to do so at arms length. They also understood why a major military operation was doomed from the beginning. If they didn't they were also smart enough to surround them with people that did. Trump did have some of those people in his first term but this time around he got rid of them because he didn't like people telling him the stuff he wants to do is stupid or illegal. So we get what we have now. Lots of money wasted, lots of lives lost, both American and Iranian that didn't have to die. And upset allies and emboldened enemies.

And the real crap thing, this experience is just another example of why you don't do things the way he has done. It won't be the last-there are alot of policy issues he will mess up before his term is up.
