LA fires

BBC

Summary

  • Six fires are currently burning. A new blaze, named the Archer Fire, started on Friday and remains out of control. However, firefighters are making progress on the two largest, the Palisades and Eaton Fires
  • Los Angeles authorities have declared a local health emergency due to poor air quality as fire ash and smoke blanket the area
  • California's governor has called for an independent investigation into how critical fire hydrants ran out of water and "impaired" the fight against the Los Angeles area wildfires
  • At least 11 people have been killed in the fires so far and it's estimated more than 10,000 homes and other structures have been destroyed
  • An evacuation order has expanded near the Palisades Fire as officials work to contain the blaze, which has raged since Tuesday
  • A forecast for more strong winds is raising fears that the blazes could spread further and a red flag warning - indicating critical fire conditions - is in place

Summary

Imagine being a billionaire, looking at the devastation, and thinking "I'm going to send a fleet of the worst car ever made to provide people with...internet". Musk (and other billionaires) could give billions of dollars to help and never miss it, but would rather hoard their wealth. What good is being rich if you can't help others?

I know one sure , the West Hills/ Calabasas fire (there's video, civilians detained a guy with a blow torch on a bike) and I suspect the one close to me Sunset - Runyon Canyon were arson. (Lots of foot traffic, no utility lines, no BBQ, cooking fires or anything like that) I don't know about the others.

But that's extremely concerning.

Irony of this, if he didn't help at all people wouldn't be criticizing his efforts.

Musk talking to firefighters about water shortages for the fire. Not a fan of the title by Gov Newsom, but thought it was worth the post to see the conversation

Newsom is out of his mind.
If I’m the governor, I’m busy getting results and solving problems. I’m glad we have the firefighters here now.

Going on Pod Save America and getting involved in a twitter war with Elon Musk is fucking weird.

I’m over him. I was ambivalent before, but seeing what SF turned into after him as mayor and what California looks likes now, im over him and his bullet train to nowhere.

Totally get it. But the point of my post was the correction by the guys on the ground, as to reason there were dry hydrants vs what Elon had been claiming on X.

I agree with you, but I also see the other (insane) side of it. He can't just "go about with his job" with all of the misinformation flying around. He should probably have a media team working on that stuff, but the insanity coming from the right about these fires can't really go unchecked.

It’s hilarious to me that conservatives are posting Bill Maher videos. 8 years ago they would have been bitching about liberals getting thier takes from a comedy show.

LOL, just because someone is farther right than the majority of participants in THIS forum does not mean they are conservative.

For the record, I've been a Maher fan for decades.

I like Maher's show, he hits both sides, he lets opposing voices talk. He's quick on his toes with a good joke insert. He also doesn't pretend to be 50-50 politically and is open about his prejudices.

I've spent half my life in Los Angeles, half in Oklahoma. One thing is consistent, when a place becomes a one-party state, the residents get shafted and there's less accountability.

I feel a majority of people want to see balls and strikes called, not some form of a homie-hookup. A little is understood and is always going to happen.

Climate Change is real. Newsom is leaning on that because it absolves him from the fact that homeless and/or mental ill people are starting fires and the utility companies own him and he refuses to hold them accountable.

I live here, it's a cop out. The response is disappointing.

Fun fact that hasn't come up, Karen Bass's vice mayor - who oversees fire and police - was indicted for anonymously threatening to blow up LA's City Hall. He is a legit politician and didn't just work for her but had a 20 year political career. But stuff like this is WEIRD.
