LA fires

Not so fast there. The narative that insurance companies were hemmoraging money is completely false. Insurance companies made record profits in 2023. To the tune of $88 Billion.

The speed that they are raising rates is significantly outpacing losses and they are raking in money, while dropping coverage in record rates. Its an industry that needs some regulation.
Oh I'm not saying they didn't make money as a whole......I'm saying they paid out on fire at much higher than expected levels meaning they will outright cancel fire policies or charge much higher premiums for fire coverage. It's a little over 2X in NE Texas so what is it in Cali or Amarillo these days.....

Got evacuated from the Runyon Canyon fire. I live three blocks from the entrance. It’s a fire road for fire trucks to get between the Valley and Hollywood that has become a popular hiking trail.

People in my building saw the fire. It felt and smelt like I was sitting at campfire. Grabbed a bag and the laptop and bounced - it was a little nerve wracking being stuck in traffic trying to escape. .

I think I left at 545 and at 6pm the emergency notices came on the phone - crashed at a buddies place. And around 1130 got word that it was contained-

It’s also suspected to be arson. Looking to get back as soon as possible because it’s home and I’ve heard looter stories - I know at least 4 people are back out of 50 units

Added a photo that’s a six minute walk from the entrance, not a drive

I would be interested to hear your opinion on what should be and what should have been done here.
it's NOT political...it is a natural disaster, drought, rising temps, high winds, climate change...but tRump likes to play this blame game and make everything political (as do you)...remember his misinformation on hurricane relief?, well he's doing it again, and all his minions are following the pied piper once again...

Glad you are ok. That looks horrible.

It's not political and shouldn't be made to be. Unfortunately every event like this has been made political by both sides since GWB flew over Katrina.

Never let a disaster go to waste......

Fire in California? Democrats fault. Hurricane in North Carolina? Also Democrats fault.

All the DEI nonsense from Republicans is such a great example of how and why their propaganda works. Obviously there's the fact that it blames non-white people (notice a pattern anyone?). But the reason it works is because their base knows nothing about how the actual real world works. I've worked in corporate America for the last 15 years and I've worked for countless old white dudes who were completely incompetent at their jobs. You know what I haven't done? I haven't worked for incompetent women, or incompetent people of color. Because the reality in this country (not the Fox News reality that's fed to you) is that you don't get to those positions as a black man or any color of woman by being incompetent. If you want to be incompetent and handed a position of power here, you gotta be a white dude.

You are lucky not to experience that. The push-back against DEI is not nonsense.

The original idea of DEI may well be noble, but the practice, in many cases, can be racist and sexist. The opposite of how fair thinking individuals should want. While there are certainly successes with DEI (ie interviewing candidates that may not have had the opportunity), DEI policies are also responsible for recruiting, hiring and promoting individuals that are not are the most qualified or best candidates.

DEI is like everything else we do now......it's a great idea. Used properly and it can right some historic wrongs. Then like everything else it gets taken to far in both directions. I can give examples of contracts that cost the public more in my field because companies with better bids didn't have an official DEI policy and thus weren't considered......it's also not some evil that is keeping the white folks down or creating danger/problems from incompetence. But where there is an inch a mile must be taken in both directions so the bases on each side can scream at other....then the folks in the middle just get sick of hearing about it.
