Who's Leaving, Who's Coming - Coaches Edition

My thought about midway is the second quarter was ‘this looks like a team that isn’t ready to play.’

Granted, both teams were in the same boat with their coach leaving but I think it’s just human nature that some will perform better than others under the circumstances.

I’m not reading too much into last night. Seemed like Tulane was a bad matchup for UNT and that happens.
They had an uncharacteristic awful game offensively with 5 turnovers to none for Tulane, and a couple of horrendous difference making calls by the officials. That said, still had 400 yards of offense and 21 points. I agree, can’t read too much into last night, probably just a bad night at the wrong time.

Admittedly, suffering through at least one of these no-show blowout losses a time or two every season the last few years has affected my opinion on this.🥴

I had a similar reaction. I hadn't watched North Texas before last night. There were several stretches where I thought, Man, this is not a well coached team.

Definitely not representative of what they have been all season. I watched them a few times. Mestemaker had 4 INTs all season coming into that game and had 3 last night. You don’t become the #1 offense in the country with a walkon freshman QB with poor coaching.

Cassity is definitely a wildcard, but he’s young and hopefully a guy on the rise and will surprise. All the more reason the keep Bowen on as a mentor.

He did help the N Texas defense take a jump this year. They were 64th in total D (we were 114th). Their pass D was 10th in the country (we were 117th). Obviously based on the numbers, and seeing them last night, the weakness was rush defense, but some of that may just be personnel issues.

I think with the Eric Morris air raid offense, we are going to have to be realistic about the defense and expectations. This type of high scoring, fast paced offense is going to put the D on the field a lot. The N Texas offense was #1 in total offense and scoring, but 114th in time of possession so that D is going to suffer some. Honestly I’d take a 60ish ranked D next year right now if you offered it to me.
Thank you. The last paragraph is probably the most realistic thing posted in this thread.

Same, only came on my radar like most others here when he became a candidate. Probably watched them for 8-9 quarters this season.

Having said that, last night was the outlier of what I’d seen and Tulane did go 10-2, fwiw. They did well enough for Florida to hire the coach away.

I’m excited about the hire and it’s great to see a new era take shape.

All those are good points. Add in two atrocious calls that cost them 14 points. Then add in it was raining and on the road against a good crowd when you know your coach is walking out the door. All that and they were still in the game in the 4th quarter.

We okay Ou on Saturday. If you can go to the game, do it. The team deserves your support

Ou comes in at 6-3 and ranked #57 in KemPom at the time do this post. They got destroyed by Gonzaga, lost to Nebraska at a neutral site, got destroyed by an Arizona State in Phoenix. They’ve beat Wake Forest (who also beat Northwestern) and Marquette (by one in a game Marquette was up most of the game). They’re playing a 9 man rotation with their core 4 of Nigel Pack, Xavier Brown, Derrion Reid, and Tae Davis all averaging around 30 minutes a game. Based on stats prior to the Arizona State game, it’s hard to find something the goons do well as a team. Given, they’re good at not fouling, they rank 64th nationally in that metric, and that could be a factor since we generate a lot of points from the line. And they really don’t turn the ball over, they rank15th nationally there, and we rely on turnovers creating transition. Other than that, they only rank in the top 100 in free throw and 2pt% shooting. They are really bad at most everything else. This is where I pull most of my stats from, look at their team rank in all categories, it’s surprisingly bad across the board, and again, that was before getting pimp slapped by the Sun Devils. https://www.sports-reference.com/cbb/schools/oklahoma/men/2026.html

Nigel Pack leads them with 18 points a game and he’s having a hell of a year. He’s at 50% from 3 and 90% from the line. He’s a +9 in BpM and is actually a slight positive on defense. The other three top Ou guys average are kind 12 points a game.

I hate Ou, so I really don’t want to put too much more time into researching them. They have talent. If Pack gets hot, that’s a problem. But again, I know we have more depth and we’ve been more consistent and better than them to start the year. It’s another victory for the Pokes.
