I still don't know what the hullabaloo is about. Can someone enlighten me?I have a bunch of very, very liberal friends. Not a single one of them gives 2 craps about Sydney Sweeney. This is 100% made up outrage to pit people against each other.

Thanks for the info. Sounds pretty silly and is likely only an outrage on a small part of the internet.American Eagle is doing an ad campaign with Sydney Sweeney where she looks hawt. The tag line is something about her having good jeans.
So some have taken an obvious pun about one of the most attractive women in the world and said it was supporting white supremacy.

Together, the campaign feels regressive and not retro, offensive and not cheeky.
I cannot blame Sweeney for financially benefiting from a system that is going to exploit her either way. Still, her willingness to participate in such an obviously damaging — and, depending on who you ask, even dangerous — advertising campaign as the latest American Eagle collection is disappointing.
The whole thing is a lot.
The jeans/genes play is a garden-variety dad pun. But when uttered by Sweeney—a blond, blue-eyed actor whose buxomness and comfort in her own skin seems to drive everyone just a little bit insane—it becomes something else. Sweeney does not speak much about her politics (for interested parties, there are potential clues, such as a 2020 tweet supporting Black Lives Matter and a mention of having conservative relatives), but this hasn’t stopped the right wing from framing her as one of their own. Her mere appearance in a plunging neckline on Saturday Night Live led the right-wing blogger Richard Hanania to declare that “wokeness is dead.” Meanwhile, speaking about the American Eagle ad in a TikTok post that’s been liked more than 200,000 times, one influencer said, “It’s literally giving Nazi propaganda.”
Yeah. I fell victim to thinking it was an actual thing, but as @milehighpoke pointed out, it could be people being outraged about it because they want to think the other side is outraged. Or like 5 people are upset about it and that was made into a way bigger deal than it should have been. Personally I wouldn't have thought about it beyond "shes hot but Im about 15 years beyond thinking about wearing American Eagle" had it not turned into a thing.
Thanks for the info. I can see where some of the folks who are upset are coming from, but I don't think that was the intention. A bad dad joke is definitely what this is.It is very much real. Here's a couple of examples from national media. And you can find this crap all over.
From MSNBC:
Sydney Sweeney's ad shows an unbridled cultural shift toward whiteness
The Atlantic:
The Discourse Is Broken

I'm pretty far left, and I agree with you. This is where the right has "better branding", and stuff to unite them. The actual left needs to quash this kind of crap, and call it out for what it is - ridiculous.I can’t. At all. It’s such a huge leap and this is what I absolutely hate and turns me off about today’s Left.

The internet tends to amplify extremes, so it is not that surprising that is happening. It is a big leap, but there are plenty of prose examples of blatant racism in our culture and administration, so it is understandable that some people (some may be targets) getting way too oversensitive when something is unrelated and completely misunderstood.I'm pretty far left, and I agree with you. My conspiracy theory on it: Trolls creating fake outrage to make the left look like lunatics. Knowing that left leaning influencers and leadership will just shrug this off, thinking it's stupid, rather than addressing it if only to just say "this isn't real, don't fall for the fake outrage".

She didn't get her big break on The Handmaids Tale. She got it on HBO's Euphoria. That's a point that isn't talked about enough. You see something stupid and it doesn't bother you because its not worth your time. The next person who is looking for something to be outraged about sees your apathy as agreement and it becomes something bigger than it should be.
The catch though, is people who are looking to be outraged find things to be outraged alot so its hard and exhausting to step in every single time and say this is stupid.
Also weird in this is the right coopting Sweeney as "one of theirs" I can't remember if it was an article here or somewhere else but she sounds fairly apolitical. So because shes white and doesn't do the full blown liberal thing they say shes one of us. Because the person who got her big break in The Handmaids Tale is obviously MAGA. She might just be someone who isn't really that political and just does what she does.

She's had a few political posts in the past....a pro-Black Live's Matter post during the George Floyd protests/riots (call them whatever you want to call them based upon your political leanings. I'm not gonna have someone try to paint me and my leanings by whichever I use because there were both peaceful protests and folks that rioted). She is though, largely apolitical publicly in her social media.
The right have mostly tried to claim her because she's blonde, hot, and doesn't mind showing off her assets.
