Gundy still has bosses he reports to. Hires, contracts even for the assistants still have to be approved through the AD and regents.
If he doesn't hire Patterson as DC what can those bosses do exactly?
Those bosses can outright hire anyone they want without his permission.
Are you sure about that? Now I don't have exclusive access to his complete contract but maybe you do. Seems odd if that's the case that his bosses have let him have complete autonomy in all the previous D1,2, and 3 coordinator hires in the past.
Generally coaches have autonomy to hire their own guys and the higher ups will just sign off. That’s the case until you lose the trust and can’t make competent hires. Holgerson was certainly forced on Gundy by Holder and Boone.
When Holgorsen was hired it was a completely different contract with a much lower buyout. I think the seesaw has tipped in Mike’s favor.

Nah, again, the admin still has hiring and veto power. Hypothetically if Zac Robinson wanted to come back and coach at OSU, the admin could hire him as OC and head coach in waiting without Gundy’s blessing. Dysfunctional, yes, but the admin signs the contracts and paychecks, not Gundy.
